OPERATOR MALFUNCTION TO THE FULLEST!!!!

BAMUTHAF'NBAM!!!
every post ive read said that if you were a tooth off, it would run very poorly!
this truck did run well. started up first time every time even at -9.5 degrees!!!

well here is the culprit!
i put a 5/16 bolt through the IP housing cover so that the IP gear would not move, when i attempted to lift the cover.
broke the seal, lifted the cover up slightly to get the timing gear cover from behind the IP gear housing.
and this is what i found.
looks like 2 teeth off to me.

i was so carefull when i installed this last time i resealed the timing gear cover, guess i wasnt as carefull as i thougtht.
live and learn.
so glad i took this apart today, now i can set my mind at ease!!!
gotta wait a day for new gaskets tho!

im pretty sure this is the way it was when i initally pulled it apart, minus the gear alignment..lol
im going to install the new vacuum pump, new tensioner with the shock, and new PSP, we will see if i have issues after that.

I appreciate the updating of the signature to keep us posted on the retardation situation.

Unable to contain my zeal for observation of finished, correct, proper gear alignment and the subsequent performance of the powerplant!

Will be anxiously awaiting further notifications!

NOW is the time to ahem....just file/grind a slight bevel on each tooth beside the timing mark on the cam gear so if ever you gotta do it again....you can see the beveled gear and align the same IP gear accordingly!

Thanks for the update.... and I too await the report on correctly timed and running engine!

and a headliner!

bad news... my brother needs to barrow this truck for a week once i get her dialed....
i should make him let me barrow his pan!, but then id wreck his harley LOL

Never pull the cover with the pump and the gear attached.... Never be off a tooth or two again.. I bet you did reinstall the gear wrong because someone before you did it wrong. Glad you figured it out and took pics too. Now this may be correct or not but.. You have some timing marks already I think. Try lining them up when it goes back together You might be advanced but try it out. See how it runs at a mark you made. then time it again to be sure. and see how it runs.

As pointed out tho, the timing is still out about 18 degrees. That is about 2 teeth out!

That deserves a prize or something, eh? Like maybe a timing sticker. :sly ;Poke

Oh, and using the dental pick to find the Y is not an Urban Myth, that was me too!
