Odd that this is happening as of late. When maintaining a constant RPM level (I.E seccond gear converter locked@ 2300 RPM) the might cummins sounds like ..... well it sounds allmost like a commonrail coming off pilot injection. Running smooth humm then its allmost like ya tossed in a hand full of nickles.

To Me it sounds like a radical timing change without any surge or decline in performance. ... .. is it just the ECM making a change to the fueling map?

Do you have bigger injectors?? My truck does the same thing and have seen the same **** with others. My truck does it MOSTLY in the winter and colder temps. I never here the timing change in the summer.

Tim: my 12 valve actually used to do that at higher RPM after the timing was bumped up to 15.5 degrees...sounds narly but i guess it never hurt anything
