valve train noise.

So pulled the covers off and everything "appears" to be fine.

You cannot hear the tick at idle, but as soon as you bring it up it starts gettin noisy. Makes no noises on or off the throttle like a rod bearing would make...which kind of puzzles me. The noise seems to be coming from either the back passenger cylinder or the one directly in front of that.

Makes no difference in noise when i swapped an injector out. Still there. Possibly a collapsed lifter?

Here is the weird part. It never EVER has done this before even on a cold cold start. You pop the throttle quick and let off completely....and it shudders and dies.
However it will sit there and idle just fine, starts fine, still with that nice "chuffing" outta the stack.

So if any of you guys have any other suggestions....I am humbly lost and stumped!

how about breaking each injector line while its running to see if you can narrow it down to which cylender. i also narrowed a bad injector down using a heat gun by shooting the exhaust manifold to see what the temps were by each port. just throwing that out there.

were any of the valve springs blackened, like a really bad exhaust guide? You may have a burned exhaust valve, unlikely bot you never know, lifters dont usually collapse but it can happen, were all the rockers moving about the same amount?

I did crack each injector line. Each one i cracked spit fuel and made a definite miss in the engine. Which is why i am so puzzled.

They were all about the same color. I did not run the engine with the covers removed. Didnt want oil all over the driveway.

I had mine off and running in the driveway...not a issue.
also listened to each one w/a long screwdriver pressed to my ear, also checked to make sure oil was pumping from the pushrod and to verify all rockers were lifting the same amount.

i picked up a complete running 7.3 tonight for the too good to be true price of 200 bucks! had to go pull it. took us about an hour. got engine, starter, alternator, and an extra IP. (i now have 4)

tomorrow ill be pulling my engine and getting this one cleaned up and a few new gaskets in her then ready to go in.
