Turn Signals Quit Working

About a week ago my turn signal indicator stopped blinking both sides. So 10 bucks later I replaced the blinker indicator. Nope.. Still nothing. So checked the fuse and its fine. Even my back up lights are working. Any ideas other than throwing parts at this issue???

You mean the arrow lights on the dash? Are the lights outside coming on? Does your truck have a clock spring or wiper contacts under the steering wheel?


You can trouble shoot the switch at the gray connector along the column (see pic) can't recall the pin numbers and I'm away from my FSM.

I do not show the indicator lights green arrows on the dash nor do the blinkers on any corner of the front or back come on. Not even a solid light. Funny how both sides failed at the same time. Need to check that connector for power next but don't know what pin has power when the ignition switch is on. Might be easy to find by checking with ignition off. then on. But knowing the pin will speed up this trouble shooting.

Does your Hazard lights work when switched ON? If they do, then it could be the flasher module.

To check the flasher module, pull it out, connect a test light clip to one side, connect test probe to battery positive, touch other side to battery negative, flasher should click ON/OFF.

Could be stop light switch on the brake peddle.

Light blue wire supplies power to turn signal switch.

Your symptoms indicate a bad switch to me. I'd start scouring the internet for a motorcraft replacement (I found one on e-bay last year), I've had bad luck with the doorman or BWD switches for our trucks.

I will be near my manual this evening & will post up with the pin #'s

Definitely check the light switch, they tend to burn out.

This is from the '87 FSM, but they can't have changed much.

If you do have to change the switch, a couple of things;
1) Watch out for the ground spring contact, it sits in a little hole on the rotating part of the switch and likes to jump out when you pull the wheel, if you lose it they are getting pretty hard to find.
2) When you lube the contacts on the switch, and the commutator rings on the steering wheel use white lithium grease, NOT DI-ELECTRIC GREASE! The arcing current across the sliding contacts turns di-electric grease into a pretty good grinding compound and wears your contacts out very quickly. I wish I didn't have to find this out the hard way.
