Turbo Discussion.....

Notice I said discussion....I dont actually plan on doing all of this.....the stupid Toaster isnt even running right now....


So Ive seen a few threads about dual turbos....so lets talk three turbos......

Lets say, two smaller remote mounted turbos....maybe at the back of the transmission......

these two run up to the front, and blow into the exhaust inlet of a much larger turbo.....after that, possibly into an air to air intercooler.....then into the IDI.

Lets assume studs, and a moose or omega moose pump.......

Lets assume lag isnt a primary concern at this point...its not a drag race unit......

I think this type of system could provide more boost than an IDI could handle....

The smaller turbos don't blow into the exhaust inlet of the bigger charger, they blow into the compressor air inlet where the air filter normally goes.
Exhaust runs through the exhaust side of all of those.

So....you run them parrallel not series?

I think you'd overspin a turbo doing it that way. You'd need a lot of volume of air.

Your picture shows what I'm talking about.

Personally, with today's technology, you don't need more than one turbo.
At least your normal everyday driver.

Never seen sequentials on anything not on the track. I really like the idea of small twins but I'm not sure I'm ambitious enough to do it myself. Has a lot of advantages. I think jasper is right, it's usually still hot wheels driven by the exhaust. I would think it wouldn't be efficient to do it the other way. Compressing the air twice will definitely require intercooling.

Turbos are about efficiency. I have spent many hours comparing compressor maps to choose the best turbo for my application. The turbo setup pictured is not efficient. I would imagine it would quickly become adiabatically inefficient.

Multiple turbo configurations are often used to increase power in an engine with a very wide power band, which is something diesels do not have.

Cars that came factory with twin turbos were upgraded in the aftermarket with a single turbo if packaging allowed for it.

I know that at least one car came factory with two sequential turbos to reduce lag, and that was the last generation rx7, but that was an engine with little displacement. Upgrades in the aftermarket were mainly a single larger turbo.

The Boost Air in the pictured system would be way to hot to be of any use other than show. In my opinion...

I dream of doing twins but that is just another piece that could fail. I will realistically just get one good turbo to swap out with this banks some day

i like the idea of paraelle turbos due to engine compartment restraints, and big engine stuff in there. on the pic above, are those h3 holset turbos off a first gen???

They appear to be 1st gen cummins holsets, but it is h1c not h3, that's what I got for my truck
