I've been told it's probably loosing fluid by being burnt by the engine vacum...I don't even know which transmission I got a e40d or c6.....Can I get some help on identifying the transmission and information about we're the fluids going.....Thank s

You've '89 7.3 but is it in a truck, van, bus/motorhome? In '89 I believe the vans and busses/motorhomes still had the c-6 and I think it was still an option for trucks too. If it's in a truck, do you have an overdrive cancel button on the panel to the right of the steering wheel below the tachometer? If you have the OD cancel button you have the e4od if not then it's a c-6. Either way, vacuum on these trucks is developed using a vacuum pump mounted to the belt accessories. I've never seen a vacuum regulator tied into the intake system on these trucks, if it is then maybe that is your problem although it might likely cause an engine run away as these engines like to run on any kind of oil, especially ATF.

How about a picture of the build tag in the door jam. That should have a code on it for the trans. Wait, as a new member you may not be able to post pictures yet, I can't remember but you can still look and tell us what it says.

First, if your transmission has three gears, it's a C6. If it has four gears, it's a E4OD. E4ODs do not use vacuum in any way. The vacuum for a C6 doesn't come from the engine with a IDI, it comes from the vacuum pump so either way, you're not losing it through the engine. If you're losing ATF due to vacuum, it will be coming out of the vacuum pump. There will be ATF all over it and everything else around it. If this is happening, all you need to do is replace the vacuum modulator on the transmission (C6 only).

Is your truck 4x4? If so, have you checked the level in the transfer case? It’s possible for the transmission to push fluid into the transfer case. How much fluid has gone missing so far, and how long did it take?
