Trade question

Im in the process of parting out an 89 f250 and figure that i have around 400 in parts left. Someone called me this morning and offered to trade an 83 suburban diesel for whats left of the truck, (Cab, frame, and axles).

The suburban doesnt look to bad, a little rust on the front of the hood and a mismatched door on the drivers side. The trucks been in storage for several years. The guy says it runs but needs new batteries and the fuel changed out.
Overall it doesnt look that bad. I was wondering if I would be able to make my money back on something like this. I need to see the motor run first,

Ive never parted out a chevy so Im not really sure what everything is worth.

Personally, I would do it just to get ahold of 6.2 so I could tinker with it.

I would do it, especially if is is a 4x4 with the power windows , barn doors, yada yada yada, but like you said see if she runs

I don't know what they're worth, but if it's in operating condition, couldn't hurt to go for it.

I have a sick idea in my head of finding a late '80's diesel Suburban and swapping a 4-53T in place of the 6.2l

I hear that! I actually thought of a 6-71, but it'd be hard to shoehorn one into a pickup (although not impossible).....but, I want to get one of these someday:

6-71 (pancake) and 5 speed manual from the factory and apparently some of them have 10-speed RoadRangers, although they're harder to come by. I'd either make it into a motorhome or into a rolling workshop....that's one of those "in the distant distant future" pipe-dreams...

My idea with the 4-53T Suburban is a fuel-efficient family-hauler....same reason I'd want a late '80's model, with more creature-comforts. Sort of a poor-man's Excursion, but unique stemming from this video posted on another thread. Unfortunately, for it to be remotely legal in CA, whatever platform vehicle I'd go with would need to have started life as a diesel...a shame because gas 1/2 Suburbans are a dime a dozen out here...

The sub is only a 4x2, that is why Im a little hesitant about it.

I guess I could go and look at it and see is it will run. Id only be a hundred bucks if I could get it running.

does it have a 40 gal tank? if it does it more than likely means that shes got a limited slip and a th400 with the tow package (same sub that I had only mine was gas) and I dented the dash gettin the radio to work, dang I wanted that (ford) stuff

From the look of the pictures that were sent to me, the rear tank is quite large. It may be a 40 gal.

Its a detroit diesel 16v-149 which is 2384 (cu in) = 39 liters. how hard would that be to swap into a chevy??

Shouldn't be too hard. Start with a GMC Brigadier tandem-axle truck, stretch the frame, and mount the engine behind the cab. Finding a tranny that'll handle the torque AND have enough gears (i.e. more than one forward and reverse gear) to work on the road would probably be the most difficult part. A V-drive shouldn't be that hard.....and there you go!
