towing woes !

where are ya'll installing the aftermarket temp sensor? i searched it and only found a few posts that related directly.. one said on the front of the drivers side head there is a port? anyone got a picture it would be appreciated..

Heck. I run 38s with 4.10s and have no problem pulling 10k while holding 60-65 in 5th. That's without a turbo. With those small tires you shouldn't have any issues pulling something like that unless you have a lot of headwind pushing you back.

Mine is in the top port of the water pump. Not the greatest area to get temps, but it gives you a decent idea of what's going on.

I just took my old temp gauge out after I Had to move the autometer sender and put it in the factory location, these have no computer to not let them start so no worries there

yes the picture is where the temp sensor plugs in just forward of the head. you can un plug it and you will not have any problems but the gage not reading, i have been without it for years, that is where i put my aftermarket gage. there is no computer to read the coolant temp.

the other sensor on the corner of the head is the overtemp sensor. this sensor lights up a gage on your dash when the coolant reaches about 240 to tell you your engine is about ready to get cooked alive like a lobster in the pan, time to back off. completely seperate circuit from the gage sensor.

thanks i will pick up a guage and install it this week.. then save for the pricier stuff like IP and injectors... have been reading some more, the injectors are pretty straight forward it seems but it sounds like there are different options for the return lines, and olive rings i think they are referred to... not sure which style mine would have.. gonna snap some pics and post them and see if ya'll can help me get the right stuff..

You probably don't want to hear anything like this from me, but I had a similar problem with my old '87 when I tried to pull a 95 extended cab truck with it. It couldn't hardly hold 65, it freaked out at signs of hills (going from palm beach to pensacola) and would lose speed pretty badly I was towing in 2nd gear almost as often as I was in 3rd. Any time I tried to accelerate, it would heat up extremely quickly. This was with a C6 and 4.10's so you'd think the truck would laugh at an 8k load. I thought I had a bad head gasket, because I knew I had two broken head bolts. Turned out that the whole engine needed rebuilt, because I could move the pistons back and forth inside the cylinders. Hopefully you don't have my luck when it comes to trucks, and it is just your IP and injectors.

i certainly hope not!! my truck seems to have been well maintained prior to my ownership, but i think most of the stuff on the engine is all factory still... so that means 276k on IP and injectors possibly.. i will start there cause even if it needed an engine rebuild i would replace those components anyway for the new motor.. now i just have to scrape the money up with the quickness to get it done..
