Well I finally got the truck timed thanks to one of icanfixall's meters. Set it right about 9-9.3 at 2000 RPM, using the pulse method on the #1 injector line. The IP is a little over a year and 12000 miles old, rebuilt non-turbo pump from Oregon Fuel Injection, as are the injectors which were new BB codes from OFI.

It has smoked since I put the IP in, and now its a little worse. (It was at 3.5 degrees advanced before I messed with it.) I'm not blacking out the sun or anything, but anything over 1/4 throttle and it rolls some haze. It will smoke also when I use the engine to slow down, which doesn't make much sense to me. It also seems to almost die when I let the rpms drop after a clutch push, similar to when the IP let go, only then it would completely die.

Just checking here to see if anyone has any suggestions. I may try turning the IP down to clear up the smoke. Seems it shouldn't smoke except when I get on it hard, particularly since its a non-turbo pump and I have a turbo (though I do have some leaks in my up pipes and don't build much boost).

1. Check your exhaust wheel on your turbo. After putting a Uhaul pump on my 94 this summer I too complained about lots of smoke, and actually turned the pump down 2 flats because of it. Turns out the exhaust wheel on my turbo was in pretty sorry shape, thus causing slow boost issues.

2. Did you set your timing using clean diesel or was it set using WVO (as I saw you do in your signature?

3. What kind of boost #s are you getting out of your ride?

From my experience a properly timed fuel sytem is gonna smoke some all mine have been that way, if the smoke isnt bad and the fuel milage is good, dont play with it, turning the pump up or down will mess with your timing

All timing has been done on regular diesel fuel. I don't really know what kind of boost I'm making, because I don't really believe the gauge. Around town it really doesn't move, maybe 2-3 psi. I haven't had a chance to go out on the highway, before changes I didn't make more than 5 psi. Though I think the gauge may be inaccurate.

or you have a boost leak, or hot side leak.

you said they were new bb codes. Mine needed to be shimmed shortly after installing my new delphi's as the springs settled in. The truck felt much smoother again once they were shimmed. I had them pop tested before too.
