I have a tick in my motor that I cannot figure out.
To begin with, all new lifters installed along with Typ4 cam, heads studded, 910 springs w/.030 shims, Moose Pump and motor resealed.

When cold, no tick at idle or cruise.
Hot (180+) idle no tick, 1300+ tick.

Oil pressure cold, 60-70 lbs.. Hot 20-30 lbs. idle, 50-60 lbs. cruise.

The only thing I can think of is a lifter/s collapsing as rpm increases and the oil thins at higher temps.

Not an exhaust leak, checked and rechecked, it's a metal tick.

I pulled the valve covers and found no loose pushrods.

Oil is Rotella T6 5-40, since day 1 of owning this motor.

Injectors are brand new Delphi's balance to 1900-1950.

Thoughts ?

have you loosened the injection lines in that area to see if the tic changes?

Check if accelerator cable insulator is not on injector line. Cable will cause a tick if touching injector line. Purpose of insulator.

Nothing touching the injector lines, I'll try loosening the injector lines.

Thanks, I'll report back

Go to HF and get yourself a Stethoscope. Best way to track down any noise. REALLY. Comes thru loud and clear.

Hold it on the sidewalk and you can hear an Ant **** a block away.

Sorry, should have explained, I already did that and
#2 cylinder is where the tick is coming from.
Swapped out that injector and it made no difference, that's why I'm thinking lifter problem but it only happens at certain temps and rpm.
Pretty much the opposite of where you would hear a lifter ticking.

Thanks

Could it be the start of a chuff....

Hate to use the c-word.

What was the engine status when you dropped it in that beautiful dent side? I see a list of parts in your sig. Were the heads gone through? How many miles ago?

That motor has been in the truck for abt. 15 yrs., at that time it had 55,000 on the rebuild.
With the mods this time around the internals looked great, still cross hatching on cylinder walls and the bearings looked brand new.
The heads and valves also looked good, no obvious flags.

The truck is used mainly for hauling/towing which has not been much, so I would guess around 100,000+ on the heads.

I'm at the point of pulling it apart replacing the lifters (again) and having the heads done, I just hate to just start throwing parts at a problem without knowing the cause.

Thanks for the compliment.

in this case, i would also suspect lifters.
there has been a few people with bad lifters lately.
i have one lifter that leaks down after the truck sits for a day.
it chuffs for a second on initial start up, it sucks but its not bad enough for me to get in there, yet.
maybe if we stopped this damn trade agreement and started making parts in the USA again, we would have better luck.

also running a typ4 cam but with roller rockers.

I hear you on the American made parts, hate the idea that the new parts might be worse than the old parts I'm replacing.

I've got a friend who worked for a marine engine rebuilder and if certain parts became scarce or prohibitively expensive they would outsource the manufacture of a new part.
On one such occasion they needed crankshafts but before making a production run they wanted some prototypes done, 3 different prototypes failed inspection, the 4th was right on the money so they went ahead with production.
Within months they started having engine failures, it turned out that the blown motors had the crankshafts that failed their inspection.
What happened is when the bids were put out (China) the importer (middleman) decided rather than do prototypes he had the manufacturer do a production run so after three tries at getting it right he was left with three production runs of bad crankshafts.
To recoup there losses they mixed the bad cranks in with the good cranks.
I'm sure this is not an isolated case.

Back on topic, thanks for your help.
