Ok so I bought a used tach sensor from a member here and it works up to to 1500 rpm then no further. Is this the sensor or tach? The sensor has a small bare spot on the insulation could that be the problem? Also it stays at 1500 for a few seconds an then drops a couple seconds after I let off of the throttle. Any advice appreciated!!!

Stopping at 1500 and hanging there on decel almost sounds like the tach needle is hanging up somewhere. Is that what it was doing before you changed the sensor out?
I had an issue with the volt meter on my 89. When I pulled the gauge out to test it I found that a little *** on the back of the needle was binding. I clipped it off and gauge works great now.

it didnt work at all before i swapped in the sensor. the jumping up and down makes me think its the sensor though.

i would check all connections first. mine wouldn't read till 1100 and stop at around 1800 all the while it was jumping all over the place. bought a new sensor from ford and it did the same thing. started checking the wiring harness and found two corroded connections. cut out the rusted terminals and spliced the wires together with some solder and shrink tubing. now it doesn't jump at all and it reads correctly
