So i swapped in my diesel cluster this weekend. Had to do a little fiddling with some of the indicators and the alternator charge lead as after the gas to diesel cluster swap she wasn't charging. Anyway i just clipped the wire coming out of the factory harness and crimped a wire running out to the engine compartment going to pin 9 of the cluster which is the signal lead for the tach. Grounded one side of the tach sensor and ran the other to the cluster. I have tach function but only when i rev it. Its a brand new sensor from ford.

Any other ideas or is my wiring approach incorrect?

this is a 94 truck with a 93 cluster gas to diesel swap. factory gas had tach too.

You should have to run both wires to the cluster. It's not a + and -, it's a sigPOS an sigNEG.

That's how mines ran, and it worked off the bat. I'll try and find the other pin it needs to go on.

Ok, you should have one wire going to A9, and the other one going to A5 (might be yellow/white)

Hope this is what you need.

Sorry for the large picture :sly

I'm all too familiar with the 93/94 cluster issues. Your alternator wasn't charging, and also your air bag system is not up to ***** now either. Bet you didn't know that part. ;Really Much better option to find a 94 diesel cluster.

since I don't have an airbag, that doesn't concern me - what issues were there?

Of course, Ihave a 94 cluster - guess I was blessed .

On a different note - I don't have a 'cruise' indicator - something I never noticed in my 95 cluster. Did this era of vehicles even have a cruise indicator? :dunno

My truck doens't have an airbag and the alt circuit is taken care of by a simple hot lead. Everything else works just fine though except the tach. Besides i got a really nice clean cluster and it only shows 44,262 miles on it vs my old one which has already been back to 300,000.

pt_ranger_V8 - alldatapro shows a completely different pinout for the tach, including one side to ground. but i guess i can try it out and see what happens.

well for future reference in searches...

Attach one lead of the tach sensor to pin 9 white/pink on the brown connector of the diesel cluster. ground the other side of the tach sensor on a good engine ground.

my new tach sensor from ford was bad. I grabbed one out of my 6.9 with the cracked block and she works perfect.

I am having a similar issue with my new Tach sender. The tac idles around 200 rpms, but give it a little gas and it jumps up to 1000 rpms. Also when the glow plugs hit after a cold start the tach will go from like 800 rpms to 200 then back up after the plugs turn off. Its like current load on the alt plays a huge part? Help?
