swap ip?

I moved this past week and now I have had my spare ip that I bought from uhaul staring at me from the passenger floorboard because I havent found a place for it in the new house, got to wondering today if these things have shelf lives. My ip is original, but the truck only has 112,000 miles on it, truck starts and runs great. If these things have shelf lives then why am I gonna let it sit and waste away when it could be put to use and I could have the one on my truck for a core. dont know maybe im crazy and just want to turn wrenches

Your actually at the limit for a pump life span. You may get another 20,000 to 40,000 miles but those wont be great hp nor mpg miles. Time is now to change and send your pump to Mel for a rebuild. Shelf life is kinda depending on how its stored. In a plastic bag with a desicant baggy... Severl years but... How many years has it been sitting now... I'm not trying to rain on your parade. Just show you how to look at things objectively. We all know a rebuilt pump can be crap right out of the box from reputable builders. But I have never heard of one from Mel ever. I'm running Mel's Moose pump and ocasionally I install my pensacola rebuilt pump just to use it. The last time I took it off the advance plunger seal was leaking so its going to get baby moosed....

Honestly I'd probably leave the IP alone as long as it's running well. That having been said, the pumps DO have shelf lives, the thing that might leak after awhile is the seals. As far as I'm concerned there is a level of risk in pulling a known good IP in favor of an unknown rebuild. 112K miles may be getting up there for an IP but we've had members far exceed the often quoted 150,000 mile lie expectancy of an IP. It all depends on if the build was good in the first place, if good parts were used, if you ran only good fuel through there or bad fuel or fuel cocktails. It is a rotary pump and it does wear so Gary is not wrong by any means, I'd just tend not to fix a non problem unless it were a true upgrade (IE adding a turbo and a Moose or DPS fuel system).

One of the biggest problems my builder and I see with cores that have been turned in that were just left "out" on a shelf or what not, inside or out, is rust and crud. If the pump is in an environment where it goes from hot to cold and back, that will form condensation and create rust. If the pump has any kind of fuel in it, or some other liquid that is allowed to settle, depending on what it is, you may have a sludge form, or a varnish that gums things up. Best bet, is to keep it in plastic, in an insulated container, with some WD-40 sprayed on the outside of the pump and in the plastic bag.

Thast how I keep my spare pumps Mel. The plastic bag around the pump is in a bucket that has a top that is water proof and does not leak. Then its on a shelf about half way between the cieling and floor.

Mel, any idea how long a fresh rebuild would last with just the pump calibrating fluid inside it in a sealed bag at controlled room temperature (69-77*F)?

Ok thanks guys I was just worried about how long it would last sealed up like that but if it will last for a while then I will just save it, it will be kept in my spare bedroom sealed in the vacum packaging
