ok i am getting a 86 f350 with a 7.3 turbo(banks sidewinder). it has a problem of stalling. it sounds like its skippy at idle. when you give it some throttle it sounds bogged down. it will stall out and wont start back up for about an hour. any ideas on where to look. po said he had the #4 injector replaced and it had build up on the bottom of it and he thinks it got on the piston and ruined the rings... it does smoke some at idle and alot when you rev it up.will bad rings cause this? or is there another problem?

Change fuel filter, then check the Lift Pump for proper operation, and make sure there is no air in the lines. Next IMO would be timing, fuel shut off valve, and general IP operation. Not sure on all the specifics on ford fuel systems but these are key points on chevy DB2's. There could be problems with the in tank fuel pick up.

Sounds like a fuel supply issue. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge you can hook up and see what kind of pressure you are seeing at the fuel filter? The filter may be complete clogged or the lift pump is dead/dying.

changed the fuel filter and it does start alittle better...but now it shuts down after about 10 secs and just before shut down it tires to idle up then chocks out...no stumble just shut off no hesitation. but it will start back up after about 5 trys not like before about an hour later....so making some progress.

Next step would be to replace the lift pump like Heath stated. It is an easy job but needs to be done right. It took me no more than a half hour and had instant improved performance. Look up lift pump threads to get pics and installation instructions if you plan on replacing it. Cost is also minimum. Keep us posted if you need more help.

or that could be the problem. what kind of pump is it? is it diesel rated? Is it still pumping enough fuel?

Like i said check LP operation and pressure, doesnt matter if its electric of mechanical. IP needs ~10 psi at idle to be happy but runs on 5-6psi just fine. If it has the WRONG type of Electric pump it might not be flow on fail and yours might have failed, only lets enough fuel through to allow idle.

Get it running and we will worry about fuel pressure at WOT later lol

Does the pump run with the ignition in the "run" position even with engine off? If so, let it run and open the schraider valve on the filter head. You should be a nice full stream of fuel. If it just dripples, there is a problem. Even better would be to plump up a fuel pressure gauge at that valve and see what the pressures are doing when the engine if off, idling, or at RPM.

its running really good now. i removed the reg. but the biggest problem was the injector po had put in....it was finger tight...i tightened it down and she fires right up...smoked for awhile but smoke is gone and i just drove it about 10 miles and was good. turbo would boost to 10 psi but it just did not feel impressive....kinda like a older 4cyl.auto car with a bad tune up...lol fcdp said that it looks like the ip is advance one notch...should i go back to stock and turn up the pump one flat? it is a turbo...banks sidewinder on a 7.3.

Still need to know fuel pressure, you dont want over 12-15psi or the IP is unhappy that way too, less than 5psi WOT is getting alittle low too. There is likely a regulator on there for a reason (ie too high of pressure stock). Check out Walbro FRC10 pumps they are what we use on 6.5's.

After pressure is confirmed then check timing and then adjust fuel screw if still not happy.

Glad she is running more than idle!
