My speedometer chatters or shakes all over the place from time to time. Are these speedos electronic or a cable set up?

If it means anything I hear a wierd rattling noise from in the gauge cluster while this is happening.

They went electric in 92. You can grease the cable just by pulling it out of the sleeve too...

It's a cable drive. Hopefully it's something that just needs clean/lube, or maybe the end of the speedo drive cable isn't pushed all the way in. The gauge cluster comes out fairly quick, no hidden screws if I remember right.

ok well it will have to wait a little while but if anything is to bad I was thinking custom gauge cluster. The only thing I need on the gauge cluster is a speedo and volt meter or amp meter(which is better?) becaust the rpm gauge doesnt work and I have the aftermarkets for water temp and oil pressure.

It is the cable, and I would not be surprised if a replacement cable, did not fix the issue. We had an 83 Slantnose F-150 and the speedometer always made noise, and the needle would flop from about 10 mph to about 35-40 , and at 55 it would just wiggle a bit. Fun to try and maintain a speed below 50ish with it.... you would just keep the speed you wanted in the middle of the "range" the needle was wiggling through. We replaced and lubricated the cable, and it still did it. Between that, and the flaky IVR, you really did not know what the truck was doing......

I had the same problem as well, I ended up buying a used gauge cluster from a salvage yard with the cable thinking if I replaced everything it might fix it, worked. The only problem was the mileage was way off... I took a fan, pulled the blades off, put a piece of rubber tube on the output shaft then cut my old speedo cable to just a few inches out of the back of the gauge cluster, stuck that into the tubing. Flipped the fan on and let it roll over and wind back to the right mileage. Just make sure the fan spins the correct direction. Can't believe I just helped an aggie.

alien-I do to if you dont mind how much did that speedo run you and is it electronic or cable

old blue- thanks but Im actually not an aggie just a screen name I made before I realized that being an aggie would cost me like 4x as much as being a texan or red raider. before the gf I wanted to go to tech or sam houston but that changed to tarleton when she came along.

its electronic. using the sender listed below. i love them and it was a direct drop in as far as the sender goes. i did have to shave a HAIR off the side of the t-case so the sender would sit down all the way. they have like a gell goo coating over the sender to water proof it. makes it a little bit fatter. What sucks about the tach is that it only comes in black. I had to use this tach for a few reasons. 1 it uses the alternator for a pickup and 2 it was the closest diesel tach (there arnt that many out there) to the speedo and fuel gauge. here are the links

It's no biggie, I actually grew up in Caldwell if you know where that is. I have plenty of aggie friends, it all boils down to just another reason to talk **** to each other...:backoff
