Slow Wipers At All Settings

So the other day I needed my wipers to work. They operated very slowly and seemed to not glide smoothly accross the windshield. The truck sat for 1 year so do I need to remove the cowl to get at the arms for lubeing it or is there something else going on. Do the arms reside in a "special area between the cowl and the drivers feet or can I see them under the dash.

I'd suggest taking off the arms and letting the motor run. Maybe the motor bushings are just tight from not being used....

Also check the ground wire at the wiper motor.

The linkages are nylon bushed and should not need any lubrication.

Well I pulled off the wiper arms and ran the motor-gear box. Sounds really noisy. I tried to remove the cover where the wires plug into it so I could get to something inside. No deal. Seems to be a puzzle so anybody know whats inside this wiper motor besides a motor and gear. Thanks

I'd check to make sure you have full voltage to the motor before tearing the cowl apart. If you have intermittant wipers the black box is highly suspect. I think there is a nice tech page on resoldering the connections inside the box. I did it to my truck and it worked great.

Well Gary, after doing the "tech" article, I have still got my same problem of sometimes the wipers just stop in the middle or a 1/4 stroke just anywhere. They also sometimes seem real slow when on low speed or high speed.

That being said, I have a second wiper motor, I am going to take apart and '"check out". With winter here I need those wipers to work 100%. I'll do the picture thing, and document what I do for lube and such, when I am done I'll hand it over to Mel for an additional page on the intermittent wiper repair.

Gotta love extra parts you can work on while ya drive the truck.

These are great postings but... I don't see anything about how this motor bolts up to the firewall or how it comes off either.

It is pretty much self-explanatory.

Just remove the screws that hold the wiper-motor to the fire-wall.

There is a hole above it that will allow you to get the arm mechanism dis-connected from the motor.

Best I can recall, there is a spring-clip gizmo that sort of pops over the motor-shaft, thus holding the arms onto the shaft.

Flip this gizmo loose and the motor is yours.

No need to take loose the cowl vent.

It can all be done from under the hood, UNLESS I am forgetting something.

Gary,

Removing the wiper motor is relatively simple. It does depend on the year, so going with my 90 Bronco.....

Unscrew the 4-6 screws along base of windshield holding the cowl down

Unscrew the 8 or so screws under the hood, holding the front portion of the cowl against the fire wall.

Remove wiper arms

Lift cowl up carefully not breaking antenna lead or disconnecting the squirter for the wipers

Remove the 4-6 screws holding the black plate above wiper motor that covers the wiper transmission

Disconnect the little clip that holds the wiper mechanism to the motor, Be careful not too loose said clip!

Gently pry the wiper mechanism off the wiper motor

Remove the wiring to the wiper motor

Remove the 3 or 4 bolts holding the wiper motor in place and remove the wiper motor.

Thats it! Pretty simple eh Gary!
