Setting up a turbo.

I am almost finished swapping a 7.3l idi into my '75 Ford. I am trying to decide whether or not I want to run the turbo.. I am a little foggy on how it is supposed to be set up. Can it be ran off 1 exhaust manifold, or does it have to be linked to both? If it can be run off 1, does that manifold have to feed directly to the turbo, and turbo only? Or can I cut a hole in 1 manifold, and pipe it to the turbo? It sounds to me like this method may not build much boost (?). If properly set up, with the turbo below, how much hp/trq gain should I expect?

Turbo has to get exhuast from both manifolds, or it wont spool correctly, as for power, well its a night a day difference

hey and welcome from P4x4.

If possible you definitely want to run a turbo for extra power. There is a sticky somewhere with dyno results and you can compare numbers between NA and turbo'd trucks.

You should use exhaust from both banks. You need a downpipe from one bank to join the other bank and go into the turbo.

So is it possible to use the N/A manifolds, or do I just need to buy turbo manifolds for the idi? I am working with limited space on the passenger side.. Maybe cut holes in both, run them to a Y, then to the turbo?


EDIT: I just read your post again. So if I cut a hole in the driver side, run a pipe up to a Y, and route the passenger exhaust to the Y, then on to the turbo..? I get confused easy,sorry..lol.

You'll need to get exhaust from both sides to spool the turbo up, elsewise it'll be a really low boost set up, like the Saab V6 turbo that has the turbo drawing exhaust from the front bank of cylinders.

The traditional IDI turbo mounts the turbo in the back of the motor, similiar to the Powerstroke, running the pipes off the manifolds to a pedestal or mount for the turbo. Adding the turbo, turning up the fuel will add 50% on average power and torque.

Now the question is, at least for this mounting location, do you have good engine to firewall clearance? You can stick the turbo somewhere else, and one of the members remote mounted his turbo under the truck, passenger side, next to the transfer case.

Manifolds are all the same I think... it is just a question of routing. I have heard of people cracking their manifolds so I am not sure you would want to weaken them anymore by chopping into them... but if you need stuff to fit, you gotta do what you gotta do.

idi turbo manifolds are the same as n/a manifolds

I think I could fit it in that location. It is a tight fit, but I do have a good amount of room. I am just trying to imagine how the exhaust would be run. Hmm, I am going to run out to the truck and get a better look.

I don't have much firewall room when it comes to running exhaust between the rear of the engine and firewall. What diameter pipe would I need?

You would need 2.25 to 2.5" pipe. After looking at the accessories, and the lack of clearance at the back, how much clearance do you have towards the front of the engine compartment?

Not much,lol. The fan will be pretty much against the rad. I should have clearanced the firewall more while the engine was out. I'm sure I could have squeezed enough room out of it. I will go take some measurements.. I may still be able to make it fit.

I have plenty of room on the passenger side. If I bring the driver side exhaust over to the passenger, into a Y, and have them meet, then run a 3" pipe up to the turbo.. will that work? Do I just use the old oil pressure line near the CDR for the turbo oil, and tap a return line into either the oil pan or the valve cover?
