Apparently I have the self adjusting brakes and now need a good procedure to manually adjust them - who has a procedure? This is for a '94 e350 7.3 IDI van -thanks!
^^^What he said^^^^ and they only turn one way. You will turn them until you can hear the shoes start to drag slightly on the drum.
I remember turning them until they made contact and then you have to back them off so they have to turn both ways -
Well they're supposed to have a little deal in there that will only allow them to turn one direction and then catch it from turning the other direction. If you need to turn it backwards you have to move the little stop arm away then turn it. It's rigged up so when you drive in reverse and slam on the brakes the brake shoes rotate backwards and actuate the little one way arm, then when you move forward and brake it turns the little self adjuster screw. At least I believe that's how it works... If the parts were all installed properly and the self adjuster isn't seized it should work.
Under normal wear and tear the adjuster only needs to move a couple clicks to keep the shoes right on the drum.
