removing lock cylinder on 92

wifey lost the only set of keys to the truck.
tried all my other keys then some hopin one would work.
but no luck.
called ford only can do vin back to 98, that and Im not sure where the lock came from although I have 3 possible vins.
have a new used cylinder to put in, but cant get the old one out unless it turns forward.
can I drill it, or does the slide hammer thing work.
dont want to spend$$$$ that I dont have to get the locksmith to make a key.

unfortuanaltly the tumbler want turn forward to allow me to push the pin up, therefore not allowing the lock cylinder to come out buy standard procedure.
as for using the door tumbler to get a key made, wont work , different locks that I never had a key for

Get a flat screwdriver that will fit tight inside the lock cylinder. Tap it in tight with a hammer, then use a pair of channel-lock pliers on the lock prongs to turn the lock. Most of the time this will easily break the inside of the lock and allow you to turn it forward to remove the cylinder.

This is the same basic method that locksmiths use to turn cylinders that will not turn with the key (notably Ford Focus).

Cool Ill try that tomorrow went out tonigt and pulled the column just incase I couldnt fix it, figured 15 min pulling it was better than a few hrs drillin it.
or If I have to I can take it to the lock smith.
of course to add more insult to injury the truck wouldnt start today.
batteries went dead, 3 yr old deka's.

the the tumbler....but i think its cast alum thou.....and i was also just kidding.....FYI if its tilt wheel and you decide to take it apart....take the whole column out first.... because i decided to take it apart when i did my berings last week and i broke the plastic piece that goes from my lock cylinder to the ign box and i was without a truck for 3 days.....just a word of advice.....and if all else fails use a slide hammer.....and one other thing....the tumblers in the cylinder arent the typical "piston" type...they are little plated that move up and down.....if you wanted to know

have you tried other ford keys, i have lucked out on this one once. if not i would only drill it if you could put it in a press. the metal pin holding it is harder than the surrounding cast and hand drilling it would cause it to wonder right off. i would try mr roboto's method first though. i ran into a similer problem last week where a cheep tumbler i bought stopped working. i managed to get it forward one last time to get it out. after i got it out i had to hold it with vise grips to get it to turn.
moral of the story dont put in a cheep a cheep tumbler from a big box store. almost left me sitting with the kids and girlfriend when it was in the low twenties out.

My buddy's '86 Ranger used to start with a screwdriver for years. I was driving it alone one day, in the middle of nowhere, and it decided that it wanted a key again.

Thank god for the crappy pot metal columns! I was able to smash chunks of metal off surrounding the tumbler, until the lock cylinder fell out. Then I was able to use the trusty screwdriver to slide the ignition rack just like it had a key again.

Hehe, he was thoroughly un-impressed upon returning his truck.

This is a good thread, I'll be having to remove the tumbler on my pickup at some point and it looks like (seeing as how I still have my key) that it should go easy to swap out the door locks & ignition. Mine can go forward & back without a key in it, but it won't actually start without a key. I don't want to deal with 2 diff keys ala GM so I'll swap all 3 when I do it.

Jred, by "cheap tumbler from a big box store" do you mean Autozone type stores? Looks like about $300 for an ignition lock cyl & door locks from one of the factory sponsor vendors here vs under $100 for the same from Autozone. I guess $200 isn't horrible if the factory stuff holds up longer than aftermarket. I wonder if testing them out in the junkyards and finding a set that felt tight would work any better? Probably not....

yes the ignition lock set i got was from auto zone and it was only $16, but that was just the ignition cylinder i didnt mess with the door locks. the one i got from NAPA was about $50 but feels much better and seems just as good a quality as stock as far as i can tell. those prices sound a bit expensive to me but again i was only messing with the ignition. believe me you dont want to be left setting because you cant get the stupid key to turn with a family or some place to go. the auto zone set i got only lasted about a month for me......

Besides, even the "masters" over at AAA can't slim jim a ignition switch. (Nor can they open a car without Auto-Liting it up).

got it out, just put a screwdriver in and turned, if I knew it would have been that easy, I would have left the column in.
and the wfe wanted to spend $45 on a lock smith.
