relay part #

Guys, I've finally got to installing my my electric fuel pump and having trouble finding the start relay you guys used with the mounting hole on it. Does anyone have a part number for it? Also why is a relay necessary, couldn't you just take power off of the FSS solenoid that you were powering the relay with.

When you start adding electrical accessories, the last thing you want to do is place additional loads on a circuit not designed for it. the FSS circuit has other things being powered by it, such as the cold start solenoid and timing advance.

The relay is readily available at radioshack or the local parts store with the little mounting tab on it. Its only 7 or 8 dollars. The relay acts as a switch to control a seperate fused circuit to the electric fuel pump. It may seem insignificant, but its the proper way. I've seen too many vehicles set on fire from poor wiring.

Thanks! Makes sense. I appreciate the help. I was at Napa and the guy got frustrated trying to help me with all the do dads and said why don't you just buy a new truck. I thought boy if your boss only knew, I'd think keeping old stuff running is keeping you employed son.

you need a napa "fog light relay" comes with socket and wires, most parts people lately are idiots and I would definately tell the boss about that comment.

I am blessed as our local Napa has some of the best parts people in town. There is 1 or 2 at a couple of other shops, but if I need good info, Napa is where I go.

I like how the 30 amp relay is a dollar more.

Is there any reason to not use the 40 amp vs. the 30. I think they only had the 40.

Nope. Go for it.

Funny thing is if you go to radioshit, in the drawer with all the relays, they stock a socket/pigtail for these also. but i usally just make my own so i don't care much anyway.

Typ4, I asked at Napa for a fog light relay and he had no Idea what I was talking about, so I bought the radio shack relay but can't find
the socket and wires.

Here is the kit I used to sell folks who wanted a relay setup when I worked at Kragen (now O'Reilly). IIRC, it comes with the relay harness, an inline fuse, and obviously all the pre-terminated connections and wire you'd need. Just skip the switch, unless you want to hide it under the dash as some kind of anti-theft thing.

Never had any complaints. It's usually in the same area as all the aftermarket fog lights.
