anyone know the proper fill amount on a D60 rear?

it's for the truck in my sig, I've gotten 3 different levels from auto parts stores, and the stealership doesn't have the information on anything prior to 1999 anymore!

So a Dana 60 is supposed to take 6 pints and a Ford 10.25 7.5 pints.

Just buy enough to fill it to the bottom of the filler hole, and then return what you don't use. I think i remember buying 3 bottles and the limited slip additive, but not using all of the 3 bottles. If you don't get an answer, I'll check my manual tomorrow.

Gear oil has a long shelf life. Just buy a couple gallon jugs and keep what you don't use.

For the Dana 70 in your truck, it should hold 7.75 pints or 3.9 quarts (four is close enough eh?).

OK so what is the difference between a Dana 60(what he asked for) and 70(what you told him)besides the number anyone have a pic of a 60? vs a 70? I think that 60 is what is in mine:

That's a good question. Also, how can you tell if you have a Sterling 10.25 or a D60?

Ford only put Dana 70 under the IDI's from 83-85. Afterward they used 10.25 Sterlings. Dana 60 rear axles weren't used on these IDI's from the factory.

Dana 60 has a 9.75 inch ring gear. 1.33 to 1.5 inch axle shafts depending on appilcation. Diff cover has 10 bolts.

Dana 70 has a 10.5 inch ring gear. 1.5 inch axle shafts. Diff cover has 10 bolts.

Ford/Sterling 10.25 has a 10.25 inch ring gear. 1.5 inch axle shafts. Diff cover has 12 bolts.

So I for sure have a Sterling 10.25 then. I wonder if my parts truck is running the Sterling. I'll have to check how many bolts the diff cover has.

just in case anyone's wondering, Napa carries the felpro gasket for the cover for $6.47 out the door, fits Dana 60, 61, and 70

held 3 quarts + a few ounces

I used the amsoil 75w90 synthetic, and walked out the door, and it was just a hair under $50 our the door total from napa with the gasket


I like the idea of not having to drain and fill it again for 500k miles, and it is nice to know the gears are all in good shape

Or you could have a Dana 61, which looks a heck of a lot like a Dana 70, and most of the parts will interchange on it too. Dana 70 should have a big "70" stamped on the pumpkin near the pinion. Easiest way to tell a 61/70 from a Ford 10.25 without crawling under it or removing the wheels is to look at where the axle flange meets the hub. The Dana's use a metal gasket between the two, which you can usually see. The 10.25 uses a rubber O-ring which is not visible. So the absence or presence of the gasket is your first clue.

Probably the same way my buddy's '86 got a semi-floating Sterling with a VSS on top of it - someone realized that swapping axles is easier that rebuilding them.
