question for mel and others

mostly mel cause i know he has one
that sleeper cab he has
i found a good deal on one and was wondering a it has seats but is it really legal for passengers? and two how easy is it to make one of theese things more sucure for use as a tool box?

I had one of these previously on an old truck. As for legality for passengers IIRC it fell under the same rules a camper does for me locally. So long as there was seatbelts, and it was secured to the chassis. it was ok to have two passengers.

As for security I took and made a special deadbolt sorta like a canopy that has the handle in the middle and two rods 1 to each side extend to latch the door. I then also added a third latch on the handle that locked it in the middle of the door.

Can't sleep in it

Unless you are 5 foot tall or less - you can't sleep comfortably
in a sleeper

I used mine for storage

You are better off to sleep in the back seat of a crew cab
with a seat that makes into a bed

Sleeping your truck in zero degree weather is not fun,
I usually stay in a hotel

With #2 diesel at $3.50 a gallon, idling your truck all night
in Winter can be expensive

Or you could snag a real coffin box sleeper off an old semi and stretch your frame a couple of feet and drop the thing in between the cab and the bed
I know it would make my truck insanely long but a 42" sit in sleeper would be perfect back there for travelling

well this is cheap and easy for me right now i wont sleep in it but it has seats and extra seats would be nice

I didn't care if it was legal or not. I needed it, and figured I'd just take my chances. I put seats from the back of a Ford Ranger in it, bolted them to the floor which I re-enforced with a 1/4" piece of plate alluminum under the floor. The seats have integrated seat belts, so they are an excellent choice. If you decide not to get it, let me know. I may be interested in another one.

That has usually been my attitude about such things.


I got a lot of good use out of the "cowboy" sleeper behind my old 1978 Chevy; the mattress wasn't as long as I was but it sure beat trying to sleep in the seat and saved me a ton of money.

With youngsters, they are an absolute must, providing a place to put them when they are asleep and a place to store them when they are awake.

Some chicken-wire tacked across the opening will keep them back there for hours.


Even way better has been the genuine Double Eagle 42" sleeper behind my F-350; it sleeps better by far than the bed in the house.

Leave the window open about an inch and the heater on low for a standard cab, roughly 75 all night.

For the second one last time I checked my fuel economy I was at 18.3 mpg with countless fuel leaks and idling for over 15 hours (it was my bed for a drunk weekend).

i think ill pass mel pm me ill link you to it thinking now its not worth converting now and then loosing the headache rack and bed space plus it does seem too small for my buddies to sit in
guess ill save up and build a 4 door truck like i wanted to lol
