I have a 52 Mack with a BB gasser. Needs a lot of work and hopefully will be done in a few years.

Going to get it Saturday 91 Mack DM690SX 300 6sp 20,000 f/a

Don't you mean 5 spd? Didn't think Mack made a 6 spd.....Anyway 300 with a 5 SPD brings back memories, bad ones....I've driven quite a few Macks with 300, and 5 spds.....They suck..They don't have enough power to pull a sick ***** off a **** pot:D ...They won't get put of thier own way....Sorry nothing personal just I hate R model Macks.....The only ones that look good are the Superliners, and some of the new elites.IMO if you don't have at least a 400 your just ******* in the wind....Just my .02 though...LOL

Everybody around has them 300/6sp. It's only running around the Boston area. I do somewhat agree with you though. If I had to do some serious work I would have bought a new truck with a 600 Cummins. Most of the time it will be used as a great big wheelbarrow on jobsites under an excavator. You know, load truck, pull ahead 200' , dump, backup.

I have to agree with you there if your just hauling around the jobsite then you probably can't beat it. Made tuff with triple frame and all. Steel body, triple frame, hmmmm wouldn't want to have to haul very far.....too heavy....:D

Yeah, the macks are a little light in the front. Mack engine only weighs 60% of what those 550 cats but the trans is a little heavier. Nose is considerably shorter. The benefits I look at is they are easy on fuel, and parts are still available. My father & I had Autocars for years. Now it is just about impossible to get parts for them and the Autocars weighed 36,### + empty.
