These are mine. The load in the picture was just over 82,000lbs., 85 ft. long bumper to bumper (measured from the cars loaded on the truck) & 13'11" high. Got tickets in Maryland, Virginia, & North Carolina. The pickup is legal as far as I know.

The LTL tri axle has a 3406 Cat 425hp with an 8LL
The tandem has a 3406 350hp also with an 8LL
The single axle L8000 pulling the lowbed has the 7.8 Ford diesel (I don't remember what hp it is) with a 5&2.
The Mack has an E7-427 with a Mack 18 speed

These 2 I drive from time to time, but not as often as the Fords.

The '90 IH tandem has a 3306 325hp Cat. It's a decent truck, but I don't really care for it much. The 3306 really feels under powered compared to the 3406s. It also rides really rough and has a horrible turning radius. It is a good, solid truck though, I just like the Fords better.

The '05 Sterling tandem has a 450hp Mercedes with an 8LL. I haven't really driven it enough to have a good opinion of the Mercedes engine, but so far it seems to be doing good. The guy who usually drives it seems to like it a lot. Has a great turning radius.

Man, your boss has one sweet set of Fords. I hear them get criticized so much, but i think they were a nice truck with great visibility & nice turning radius. My friend has an L-8000 S/A with an 8.3L Cummins. I can't believe how easy it is to manuever. Motor is a little weak at 215HP, though.

The 7.8L Ford diesels had 210-270HP. How many miles are on the 7.8L?

Yeah, I really like the old Fords. They are no Pete or KW, but they are a good truck. And you are right, they do turn good. Even the Long nose LTL tri axle gets around fairly decent considering its length.

I think this one might be a 250hp, but I don't remember for sure. It does good pulling the small dozers and rollers. Sometimes we move the Komatsu PC120 excavator on it, and that is asking a bit much, but it will do it. I think it only has around 35- 40,000 miles on it. Almost all we use it for is pulling the small lowbed around. It very rarely gets used as a dump truck.

How well does the LTL Tri-axle pull with the 425 CAT when loaded-say 20 ton + ?

It does good, but not quite as good as I would have expected a 425 to do. I would think that if it had a good tune up it would pull a lot better. An LTL would make you a nice truck if you do end up getting something bigger and it seems like quite a few came with the 425. Although if you are going to be off pavement with it a lot a regular L-9000 might be better. I have a lot of problems with the front end sinking out of sight in soft stuff with the LTL. The regular L does much better. The LTL is great on the road though. There is a guy around here with an LTL tandem with a 425 that has been turned up to 475(I think) and that thing will move right along real good!
