When I purchased my 92 F350 7.3, I ordered the ambulance package with the alternator upgrade. I believe that it had a 165 amp capacity. I have tried in vain to better identify this alternator, but I haven't been able to determine if this is 1G, 2G or 3G.

Can anyone provide me with any information on this alternator?

Thanks in advance for any information that anyone can provide.

I have one of them from an ambulance. If it has 2 large posts on the back then it's a leece Neville. 1g = external regulator and one kinda large post on the side. 2g is smaller with no large post. 3G = one large post on the back

FarmerFrank not to hijack thread but did you ever figure out the wiring? I seem to remember you posting about it. If op has a factory installed one maybe he can post some picture.

This is definitely a Ford alternator, and if I recall, has one large post on the back with the red positive cable attached, along with a two wire plug that connects to the top of the alternator. Looks very similar to the photo that I saw of a 100 amp alternator in another post.

Will try and attach some photos in the morning.

Sounds like you have a 3G. They have a 2 wire plug on them.

Ironworker, I figured out how to wire it, now I just need the time to install it. Pretty simple, big 12+ big ground wire and an exciter wire.

in '92 you could have the old 1g alternators.all the '92 with the old school alts sport the old V belt setup still.

if you have a '92 with a serpentine belt system, then you also have the 3G alt.

if you need a replacement alt.don't worry about ambulance package........unless you have an ambulance lol.:D the 130A 3G has never left me wishing for more, with a plow, auto crane, electric cooling fans or dump bed.

there's no mistaking the updated alts:

Here are the pictures that I promised. Was somewhar surprised as I would have sworn the cooling fan was internal and the positive post was on the back of the alternator, not the side.

yeah,so v-belt and external fan.you'll also see an external voltage regulator somewhere on the firewall/ inner fenders too.
there's a lot of info on how to upgrade that old gal.you swap that out with a 3g and you can give someone a boost @ idle and have their bats charged up enough for them to start inside like 2-3 mins......plus of course you stayed charged up all the time doing whatever you need done too lol.no low dips at idle and dimming headlights etc.rip that sucker out and toss it.3G update.;Really

That looks like the 70 or 75 amp alt. I believe the early ones prior to 1989ish were a 60 amp (small little alternator) which is what I have on my 84; and then there was this 70ish amp unit for a few years before they went to the 3G. My 60amp does fine for the load I put on it which is nothing more then stock and I have a larger 70 amp in the shed that I might put on one day for "overkill" haha

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I know when I ordered the truck it had a high output (for that time) alternator, but couldn't remember the number. Somewhere, I have the original window sticker, but thanks to the answers I received, I won't need to dig it out.

Now I just need to think about the best way to upgrade it to meet the current demands on the electrical system.

Thanks again.

Same alternator I have on my 86. External regulator on passenger side fender. Mine had the same 2 pin plug on top but only one wire in it.

Mine has stopped charging a few times and easing with wiring and plugs sometimes helps, other times it starts charging by itself. Hotwiring field to full voltage it goes to about 13v and slowly climbs then settles about 14v and bounces. Voltage usually bounces up and down every second so light flash bright/dim. Finally said screw it and ordered a 130 amp 3g for a 95 4.9 van and a harness/plug and just gonna do it right. Now that I'be got group 31s and new cables I want it all to just work before it gets real cold and bites me.
