old banks turbo

[92 IDI]

I just got an old banks turbo with all the exhaust and intake parts.
I pulled them off an 86 idi with an e40d it will be going on an 92 idi with an 5 speed do i need to change any parts?

The crossover pipe is different between the auto and manual transmissions.

You will have to be creative with the up pipe if it comes up the drivers side of the transmission. It can be done with a little skill and patience, I just didnt have it when I had that same kit for mine.

The kit on mine was used and let me tell you, It was a B#$@$!!! All the pipes were welded to accomodate a T-18 and just seemed like a tighter fit for the ZF. I have removed it and reinstalled it probably three times, and everytime I feel like selling it cause I get so frustrated.

All that aside, When you are finished it will be well worth it. And get some help!!!!

I am having the same problem. I have a manual tranny and got the pipe on on the driver side. It fit horribly and developed a big exhaust leak on the turbo side. The pipe also rattles against the cab and drives me crazy!!

Well, if it goes like it went for me, about $200 and it will leak. Major pain. I took one from a C6 truck and tried to squeeze it around a zf5. I'm contemplating stove cementing it or trying to take it out as one piece and welding it, then wrangling it back in there (its leaking at a joint they put a exhaust clamp on).

Well When my exhaust went all the way to the back, I had them make me a piece that went in place of the muffler so it had a bend, and he only charged me 15, But I welded it in. I would imagine it wouldn't be more than fifty or so.

Can you get a band clamp on it? Like this?

This is the only style of clamp I use these days. I have them on all the exhaust joints in my truck.

is it possible to get the stock y-pipe for the zf5?

Banks doesnt support their older systems anymore. Give it a try putting it on, ya never know maybe it will fit,

Banks does support their old stuff, just maybe not as well as we would like. When I needed o rings and a drain grommet, I called and it took a few minutes for them to find what I was looking for but they found them and I got them for just a few dollars. The number is 800-601-8072.

I'm going to call them when I think about it and see about a y pipe for the zf. I'm not sure if they still sold this style turbo when zfs were available. I was also going to look into if there is any similarity between the sidewinder and the old style up pipe, might be the same.

I don't really know how the other turbo styles compare, but this one seems like a royal pain on all fronts. I really don't care for how the air cleaner and all that cover practically everything in the engine bay. It takes 10 minutes to take everything apart and longer to put it back together just to test glowplugs or investigate a simple fuel leak or something.
