I dont know about the solenoid but just going on the fact that its an e4od would steer me away considering he wont tell the miles.

Im calling BS on that miliage. I would say 200xxx atleast without seeing it. Not to mention the idle time. There are plenty of better trucks out there IMO.

ok well the guy has emailed me back sayin some things i dont wanna here well here it goes:

1 the truck doesnt go much on road just for firewood truck
2 truck idles 4 to 5 hours 3or 4 times a week
3 push button glowplugs so he also says he has to hold in the button for awhile til the light comes on
4 he says the thrid to overdrive solenoid is bad he says its a 35 dollar peice can anyone comment
5 he wont tell me miles on the truck it gets irritating after 6 times u emailed about miles on truck he wont answer back lol

ok so guidance he wants to trade straight up for my durango would this be a good deal or is it not worth it?

No third to fourth shift. Might need more than a solenoid pack. Witch will run you about $150.+ bucks. It could have puked up the snap ring or just fried fourth gear.

Figure a tranny in the deal.

Looks like I'm a little late but the explanation offered in the ad doesn't - uh, add up.

For overdrive to engage both shift solenoids are switched OFF. Definately something more going on in there than a bad shift solenoid.

so dave i know lil to none about trannys now explain to to me real quick without changin thread now i have a idea in my head

ok so basically a tranny is like a main switch full of four or five or 6 switchs lol like a on off sequince in order to go in first you need it to be switched to on but the others need to be off the second needs to be on but first turns off and third turns off to run second etc etc then opposite direction to drop back down or am I just making my brain work to hard lol i mean oh well hell you know what i mean

For first gear: S1 on, S2 off
Second gear : S1on, S2 on
Third gear : S1 off, S2 on
Fourth gear : S1 off, S2 off

The idea behind this system is by switching on 2 solenoids in the correct sequence a total combination of up to four possible outcomes are possible (2 x 2 = 4). Other solenoid shifted transmissions use one solenoid for each shift but ford was able to simplify their design with the 2 x 2 setup in the E4OD.

Heres some more info including a table about 2/3 down on this page that shows all 5 solenoids and how they work:

http://www.thedieselstop.com/faq/9497faq/maint/stj/stj71a10.htm

That is for 1996, but the shift solenoids function exactly the same across all years of E4ODs.

It's a little more complicated than that, The E4OD has a four element Torque Converter Clutch and a gear train that includes three planetary gear sets. The hydraulic control system has five electronically controlled solenoids, Shift feel through line pressure control, Shift scheduling through shift valve position control. There is whole bunch of valves that are hydraulic pressure actuated against spring pressure that sends the fluid to the various clutch packs to engage the gearing. To go into OD the OD clutch pack and forward clutch pack engages which locks up the TCC. The computer is somewhat controlled by the VSS, OD ON/OFF switch, shift position and the TPS.
Well Dave you beat me to it. All that typing for naught. But thats a more detailed description.LOL
