Oil question

Is there a preferred brand and weight of oil that guys like for the 7.3IDI or is it best to just follow what the manual recommends? Eventually, I think I'll use Amsoil, but right now I just want to change the oil.

For a simple answer, Any 15w40 diesel rated oil will work. Delo and Rotella are the big ones.

Now for a complex answer there is CI-4 rated and CJ-4 rated oil. It gets more complex from there...

If you're changing the oil and filter every 3-5K miles any diesel rated oil will do. 15w40 is great for your climate. As for the amsoil RLDSL is an Amsoil dealer here, you probably will need to use AutoRx to condition the seals and clean out the crap in your engine in order to avoid excessive leaks from the solvent properties of the synthetic oils. I'm on my 2nd rinse cycle and soon to try the diesel and marine 15W-40 CI 4 plus amsoil. We'll see how it goes, since I haven't done it yet I can't recommend for or against it.
