New to me 97 Powerstroke

Picked up a 97 Crew short box Powerstroke F-250 Friday.....Its bone stock and 225K. Got it from a buddy who put the last 100K on the truck. He towed my off road rig 500 miles a couple weeks back and netted 16.9 mpg at 70 mph. mMy old 89 IDI was lucky to get 8-9 mpg at 70 mph. So I had to have it . I always wanted a 92-97 body style crew, well now I have one.

So what I want to do is get the best mpg's I can from this thing. It still has the factory exhaust on it so I want to be rid of that......any ideas? I don't want to simply cut and weld stuff in place, would prefer a whole kit (links?).

Also e40d mods....I plan to drop the pan and maybe get a larger capacity pan (worth it?) and put a larger cooler on it up front.

I already replaced the vacumn pump yesterday, it was bad and had no power brakes. I also need to replace the fuel lines from the steel braided sections to the inj. pump as they are a bit rusty and I had to "band aid" the return side yesterday as it was dripping fuel. I can get the two stainless braided lines and the two pieces up to the pump for about $100 from my local dealer, anybody know of any other source? LMC is a bust when it comes to diesels.....

Congrats on the ride.

To make the E4OD happy. Install a good shift kit. Trans Go Tugger kit is a good one to use. Another would be the Sonnax Sure Cure kit.

As for the tranny pan. Put the money that you save by not using it, into a better cooler. A bigger cooler is better. Tru-Cool makes a good replacement cooler.

Now if you want to make fluid changes easy. Use the updated Ford 4R100 4X4 pan. It now has a drain plug and uses a reusable rubber gasket.

A 3' downpipe makes a noticeable difference on these. I didn't document the mileage, but the 50-70 acceleration times dropped by 2 seconds.

Congrats. Do the tymar airfilter. That helped a ton on my 99 and cut the muffler off for now till you get yer full turbo back system.
