Well, after having more torque convertor troubles tonight I decided to replace the FIPL a few days early to see how things go tomorrow back and forth to school.

I tried adjusting the old FIPL, but gave up. Can't get to the bolts to adjust it with the tools I have...

On a lark, I decided to remove the old FIPL and toss the new one on. Voltage was in specs (not so with the old unit) right out of the box. NICE! 1.10 on the low end, 4.10 on the high end. Ahhhh... Dead on... right where it oughta be.

Test drive showed no real difference, ALTHOUGH it feels like there's more power. Why would this be??

The truck still is unlocking the torque converter if I let off/reapply the pedal. I sent BTS an e-mail 5 days ago and haven't heard back from them yet... dunno why they're so slow getting back to customers. The truck will need to see Brian sometime soon so he can check this issue out.

Made an appointment today to have Brian check things out. We'll (the truck and I) be at BTS in early April on our way to South Carolina.

We'll see what he finds.

the tc is supposed to unlock when you let all the way off the pedal and it will lock back up when you put your foot back on.

Thank you. Maybe that's what happening.

Still can't explain the excessive black smoke in Reverse... and the engine dragdown in Reverse, 1 and 2 during the same time period when that is happening (doesn't happen all the time).

Imagination, lol.

That is standard procedure for an IDI, if you have a powerstroke maybe not, but yeah, my truck has been doing that for the past 14 years, lol. Only a couple ways to overcome that, first is to figure out how to adjust the FIPL in such a way so that it always thinks you are slighly applying the throttle, so basically the low voltage would be 1.2Volts, but then your shifts may be messed up.

Second, install a manual T/C lock switch.

Third, buy an aftermarket computer for the E4OD. I would imagine those thingies can fix this, but they're almost 1000 bucks. And plus, i'm not entirely sure they can do this, would have to ask around.

Lastly, build your own computer controller ;Really

Thanks Yaric... but still doesn't explain the occasional smoke and the bogging down of the truck in R, 1, and 2.

Wonder if the IP is the problem there.

When this is happening in Reverse, the truck is backing much faster than when backing when the problem isn't occurring.

Does the IP "know" what gear the truck is in? What would change between fueling in Drive and fueling in Reverse, 1, or 2.

I really think this has to be a transmission issue... but I've never had trouble in Drive. Trans connectors are all clean.

That's really weird about the reverse thing. Almost sounds like your engine is being bogged down from the T/C locking, but the thing is the T/C can't lock in reverse.

The IP has no clue what gear the truck is in only control variable it has is the throttle cable and the Solenoid that changes timing. I wouldn't think that has anything to do with it tho. Perhaps you do have a transmission problem... I'm not too into trannys tho so i don't really know what it could be. If you wanted for testing purposes you could install a switch to switch between computer control and OFF for the T/C lockup. When you start experiencing whatever it is you experience you can switch the switch OFF and see if it changes anything.

From my experience though if the T/C locks while you're in first or second you defintley know it, it launches the truck forward and/or stalls the engine.

I was just thinking. I'm pretty sure you are trying to adjust the wrong bolts here. There are bolts that look like adjustment deals but you're not supposed to touch them. All the adjustment you're supposed to do is with the screws that hold the FIPL on. like if you loosen the FIPL yu can twist it either way just a hair bit and that's all you're supposed to do. Dont try to adjust the other big bolts on the pump. Just lettin ya know. but seein you got it adjusted and what not already i guess it doesn't matter.

Thanks, Yaric. I appreciate your thoughts on the FIPL and transmission.

Not sure how to wire the torque convertor switch. I'll poke around and see what I can find.

I'm glad I didn't move the other bolts... things are good with the new FIPL installed. I guess I got lucky with where I put it. That is CERTAINLY not a lot of adjustment... maybe 1/8 of an inch either way?? Geezzzzz... but the new unit is within spec.

Trying to get the witch squared away for her cross-country move and subsequent tow duties getting horses moved to our home in South Carolina from Illinois and Georgia.

Thanks again,
Mike
