Okay, so here goes. I have a 86 6.9. I bought the truck for $800 the guy said it needed a starter... Come to find out it's a lot more than that. I've done all the typical stuff to try to get it running, ether charging batteries checking all connections. From everything I've read timing looks like it's pretty close top dead center mark on the crank is where it should be and the timing down on the pump gear is at the 4 o'clock position. The truck will still not start. It'll turn over but no smoke and if I hit it with ether it slows down to the point to where it won't even turn over. Everyone is telling me that it's a good possibility that it has sheared a keyway. I've got it down to the timing cover I'm just trying to get an idea of what could be wrong before I go the rest of the way.

Can you get a pic of the gear alignment marks?

To me sounds like it isn't even cranking fast enough.

Have you verified that you're gettin' fuel to the filter head? Use the schrader valve, next to the fuel inlet on the filter head. If you are getting fuel there, crack an injector or two, in order to verify that the injectors are getting fuel. Maybe using too much ether as well. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah i just went to get the kids from school, ill do that when i get back. I thought the same thing about it not turning over fast enough. I charged the 2 batteries that were in it. And charged two more. Hooked them up together. Still 12 volts just a **** ton of amps. And got it turning pretty quick. Fast enough to start, it just never did. Also has a brand new starter on it. And it sounds a bit off when its turning over. Kind of like its out of time.

Ive also checked that too. I get a small gush when i poke the valve. And fuel squirts from the injectors when i crack them a little.

Unless you've had a idi before, you can't really just say it's cranking fast enough. Lol
Doesn't matter how many batteries you have if the starter is junk. Or the cables are rotted.

My step dad is a diesel mech. Its what hes done all his life. We had this thing turning over fast. Any faster and we might of had to buy new motor mounts.

Are glowplugs working? How many miles on engine? Fuel delivery and starting rpms mean nothing if the engine is worn out. Do a compression check if you can, that will tell you a lot. You have not said whether or not the engine catches ever, does it just crank without any results? Pulley v-grooves look like it has not run in some time. Take off valve covers and see if the rockers/pushrods are operating.

The original story i got from the kid i bought it from was this. Its an old farm truck. They were driving it in a field, they got it to where they were going, shut it off. It never started back. Wouldnt even turn over. Thats why he said starter. So i gave him the money. Changed the starter in his driveway. It turned over, slow, but it did turn over. He said he changed hoses between injectors so it may need to be bled a little more. I bled it properly. Still nothing. So i charged the batteries over night. Came back and tried again with no avail. So at this point im pissed. I ask the guy for my money back. He said he had already spent it, so i called a rollback and got it to my house. I have to mention, during the thousand times i tried to start it. It fired maybe 3 times. Enough to have a slow roll of grey smoke out the tail pipe. Ill have to check mikes when i get home.

If your glow plugs are working, then I'd have to lean towards low compression. It sounds like you pretty well covered everything else. If it has a manual transmission, you could try pull starting it.

Okay, ill do a compression check in the morning and post with my results. Do i have to use a special comp. Tester? Or will one from a gas burner work?

You need a special DIESEL tester or you will blow out a gas compression tester.

it should start on ether .. even with low compression ..

DISCONNECT glo plug relay .. and leave a rag soaked in gasoline in the 'remove while fording tube' and crank it ..

if it's got batteries and starter enough to turn fast .. AND it's getting fuel .. it should kick off ..

i suppose you changed the fuel filter .. and tried an elec fuel pump directly to the IP ?

like IDIBronco said .. pull start it if it's a stick shift ..
