That does make sense. My understanding is that the sulfur in the blowby from the old dirty diesel fuel would create sulfuric acid in small amounts in the crankcase obviously the oil had to wash away and neutralize this in order to keep the engine alive and happy. I can tell you properly made biodiesel has little to no sulfur in it, and if anything it will probably be neutral or slightly basic if its anywhere close to ASTM spec. As far as the WMO and WVO the acid may well be a valid concern, but probably not for tranny fluid or 2 stroke oil.

Whereas we are running the older engines and adding 2cycle/wmo/biodiesel to the ULSD to (hopefully) help our mechanical engines, where does that leave us
regards TBN/acids? Anyone have actual tests confirming where that is?

WMO can leave you with higher levels of acids depending on what type of engine it was in. If it came from a diesel then your starting with higher amounts than from a gasser. Adding bio will be very low in what you put in however in our diesel engines they will still make acid through use. It just means a bio truck's oil will last longer as far as the additive package goes. The 2 cycle oil truck won't change much from a straight diesel fuel truck if your mixing at 100.1 or more. The point is the older trucks running CI rated oils will still get good protection because a CI rated oil is a high TBN oil to start with. The Amsoil AME 15W-40 oil is 12 TBN new. That offers greater ability to absorb and neutralize the acids manufactured in the engine for long periods of time and that is why they guarantee a minimum of 15k miles on the oil.

If you look at that list in the link on the first page you will notice that redline actually has a better additive package than amsoil. Highest tbn content of all. Some of the mineral based oils actually have as good as numbers as ams does. You dont have to run a synthetic to get a extended drain interval You just need a good additive package.

But all the oils have good enough numbers to get what most people consider a decent drain interval. Even the cj-4 with the lowest tbn nunmbers, would be more than good for a 5-7k drain interval in my opinion. Not trying to rev up the amsoil guys, its a good oil but not the only oil out there.
