Maybe a Dumb Question

Will a 16x9 size wheel fit with standard 235/85/16 towing tires? I know a guy who is getting rid of his wheels and tires for a good price. I want to fit my new tires onto his wheels. His truck is a 96 Dodge with 8 lug bolt pattern. I do not know much about wheel and tire combinations and am not sure if this would even work. Any help would be appreciated like always!

it would work...just not the best...I'm on 16x8 255's and thats a nice fit..check what the tyre manufacturer suggests for rim size on their web site...just as a precaution.

I called a tire shop and they were a little skeptical with the setup. They said it would go on but would be a stretch. Will a dodge 8 lug bolt pattern even fit??

NOT enough info...what year of dodge...what offset of wheels...lots of particulars that are not being covered cause the information is not provided...

How are you measuring the wheel width ??

I bet the wheels are 8-inchers, as I never saw a 9-incher; not saying that it ain't possible.

Measure rim-width from INSIDE bead to bead, NOT across the entire wheel outside-to-outside.

A 235 will fit an 8-inch rim okay, not good, but okay.

We have installed many many 235s on 8-inch rims with no safety issues.


That being said, your truck has conical nuts, right ??

The 1996 Dodge should have FLAT-FACED lug-centric wheels with flange-washered nuts.

Conical nuts cannot be used on flat-faced wheels.


As I cannot personally see and examine the wheels in question, most of what I just said is purely educated speculation.

The lug pattern is the same as your truck and those are certainly not stock dodge wheels - they look aftermarket w/conical lug nuts. I'd run with it.

I just had a look at the C-L picture.

If you look close, you can see the flanges on the nuts.

That being said, those don't look like O.E.M. Dodge wheels to me.

They look more like plain old generic fit-all after-market wheels to me.

Note the absence of the little Allen-headed screws that should be in all those little holes.

Someone has either removed them to achieve a different look, or didn't know they were only there for looks and removed them, thus screwing them up beyond re-use.

The amount of offset doesn't even look like 8-inchers to me; more like 6.5-inch trailer wheels; then again, I ain't looking at them in person.

If that be the case, and he has been running them with those flanged nuts instead of conicals, then I would expect to see the holes somewhat wallowed-out.

Then again, I could be wrong and those actually be factory Dodge wheels.

They are not factory dodge wheels. They are aftermarket wheels he fitted onto his Dodge pickup.

On even closer inspection, there is evidence that, like I expected, he is using the flanged nuts on conical-seat wheels.

Notice how the studs do not even come flush with the nuts, but only have a few threads holding.

Were I you, without actually being there and able to eyeball the lug-seats, and without being able to mount each wheel on an arbor and spin it for trueness, I would leave them be.

There are just too many ways for a wheel to be just so much scrap-metal to be buying them sight-un-seen.

I see more junk wheels for sale than I see complete sets of good wheels; out of four wheels, I can usually cull at least two of them.

They are just like cows; there is a reason they are at the sale-barn.

Hmm he said he is using cone shaped lugs for these wheels. I am also curious as to why there isn't much thread holding the bolts on.

Those rims are aftermarket, and probly 8" wide. Those ARE DEFINATELY conical lugnuts, I can see the bulge when I look closely.
And if the dodge was/is SRW it would have used conical style lug nuts, not flange nuts, ONLY the dually had flange nuts(1994-up anyway).
