May have access to a VGT for a cummins...

Ok sounds like a buddy of mine has a couple VGT's and may part with one, they are alledgedley from a cummins.

My question would one of these by chance be a good setup for a total one off custom turbo for our engines?

Just askin is all...he may trade for a hydro boost setup I have...:sly

Wmoguy is doing a Vgt right now. And yes they would work really well on and idi. I have posted on a few threads about this. If you look on wmoguys thread and another one on Vgts you can find the info I typed up...

they are the -Flame Thr HOT thing that the cummins guys are installing. i feel it would work great on an idi

The turbo is called an he351ve

You can pick them up in great shape for under 4 bills here in the states. The turbo is psychically enormous, I think remote mount or maybe placed in the area a battery would sit is about the only option. That said I'm anxious to get it going, it's just a hunch since as far as I know it hasn't been tried; but I think it should work pretty well.

Ya I've even seen guys do um in a compound setup as the small turbo but I think they might even be decent as the big turbo on our application cus we aren't pushing near the boost a Cummins is. They can push 30psi by themselves, so using a small turbo to light it up would lead to some crazy low end boost.

Under $400 for a turbo? I need to move south of the border!

Try and find one of those for less than a grand here.....IF you can find one!

I could see how they would work well. My 3406B is a hotrodded engine, and a co worker has an ISL 365 that will hold it's own. It has a VGT on it and it seems to work good...the only way I can get around him is to let the demon loose.

That lets the little 10 liter ISL run with my 15 liter Cat...until I jam the throttle pedal aginst the oil pan. But....think about that for a minute....an engine with 2/3 the displacement will pull with my engine at 3/4 throttle....how could that be a bad thing for an IDI?

A Vgt definitely give a nice boost curve and when they light up full boost is pretty much instant. Plus when they open up it helps with egts. A win-win if you ask me...

The problem with Ebay, is this. I am a Canuck. I have to use Ebay.ca.

Where you Americans can use Ebay.com. I can't buy ANY of the uhaul IDI stuff, because they plain jane won't ship to canada. I can't even contact them to ASK if they will ship to Canada.

We are pretty much one of your states, minus the flag...I don't see why they wouldnt ship to me in Nova Scotia.

Bottom line is this, If I can't find one on Ebay.CA....forget about trying to get one from the US to here.

Guys: I feel like we are throwing around a lot of concrete statements like: "it will work well, etc..." when in reality as far as we all know, no one has actually put one on an IDI (ford IDI at least) IMHO at this point we'd be better served talking about "in theory it SHOULD work well"
Maybe I'm just overly sensitive about internet folklore quickly turning into "fact" If so, please feel free to disregard my thoughts above.


88Ford: As for the idea of using an HE351VE as the atmospheric turbo in a twin setup (with a smaller turbo as the pressure turbo) I think thats a really really bad idea. Heres why:

1. The HE351VE housing changes from 3cm to 27cm. 3cm is incredibly small. For comparative sake, the older 24v Cummins pickups w/ Auto's came with a HY35 which had a 9cm housing. On the smaller displacement Cummins, even stock, it spooled very fast. I know, I owned one.

2. The displacement engine this turbo is mainly used on is the 6.7 Cummins. Oddly close to size as our 6.9/7.3. My Dad owns a 2011 Dodge w/ this setup. The truck is bone stock and always will be. It's making positive pressure just off Idle. Now for speculative sake, imagine a slightly larger displacement engine using this turbo. Building boost fast is not going to be an issue.

3. Suggesting using a smaller than 3cm turbo to get faster spool up, would mean using a turbo the size of that stupid keychain that Smogie guy had on here. It would be a turbo smaller than I see guys putting on their snowmobiles. In other words, it would be like pushing all your exhaust thru a drinking straw. It's begging for drive pressure problems, which will mean in major engine damage or at the least, popping head gaskets for fun.


Some other info on the HE351VE for those interested:

1. The HE351VE is well within it's map range up to 45psi, not 30psi. As Alienturtle suggested, this is a hot mod right now for guys running the older 5.9 cummins. The general consensus is this turbo does a fine job up until about 450-500rwhp. I.e. way more power than we will see out of our IDI's.

2. I don't have all the stats handy on the HE351VE. But is' eerily simliar to the HX40/35 combo you hear people talk about. Which I've owned, and is a fantastic turbo. The HE351VE has a 60 series turbine and compressor wheel. It'll move a bunch of air and exhaust.



Not that it was directly asked here, but if one cares. I'll share my concerns as I go down this road of using the HE351VE. There are two of them:

1. Drive Pressure issues. I'll have a boost gauge dedicated to monitoring drive pressures, with a goal of keeping it all as close to 1:1 as possible. I've read that this can be a challenge with this turbo in abnormal applications.

2. Too much boost too fast. I've watched countless videos on midly built Cummins motors (the 5.9) and this thing built 40+psi in a blink of the eye. I'm worried about controlling the boost and having it come on faster than I'll be able to react to have the housing open up and drop boost. Obviously on a IDI like ours, that isn't too happy pushing north of 20psi'ish this could be an issue.




@ Goofy: If you really want an HE351VE, I can get tons of them for about $400 in great shape. If you are serious about it, PM me. I'm sure we can figure out how to get one shipped your way.

Right, the He351 was what was on the 3rd Gen 5.9's (common rail) which was not a VGT. Correct?
True about the sensor, however in an application like ours, there is no electronics, and no real way to use the electric stepper motor and electronics either. (Unless you are UBER awesome with building custom circuitry) So the low boost sensor thing is really irrelevant because the entire electrical system on the turbo is deleted in an application like ours.


Those that want a little more juice could always get the HE451VE. Same concept, same design turbo as the HE351VE, it's just bigger and was used on larger displacement engines. There is a guy in Wisconsin running around with a 94 5.9 Cummins/Dodge with this turbo (the 451VE) and he seems to like it quite a bit.

I do believe you are right. Anyways, I dont think we ought to be boosting anymore than low 20's anyways.

And the other is the HE351CW, which is just wastegated I believe. Its off 04-07 5.9 cummins.
