Guys: I feel like we are throwing around a lot of concrete statements like: "it will work well, etc..." when in reality as far as we all know, no one has actually put one on an IDI (ford IDI at least) IMHO at this point we'd be better served talking about "in theory it SHOULD work well"
Maybe I'm just overly sensitive about internet folklore quickly turning into "fact" If so, please feel free to disregard my thoughts above.
88Ford: As for the idea of using an HE351VE as the atmospheric turbo in a twin setup (with a smaller turbo as the pressure turbo) I think thats a really really bad idea. Heres why:
1. The HE351VE housing changes from 3cm to 27cm. 3cm is incredibly small. For comparative sake, the older 24v Cummins pickups w/ Auto's came with a HY35 which had a 9cm housing. On the smaller displacement Cummins, even stock, it spooled very fast. I know, I owned one.
2. The displacement engine this turbo is mainly used on is the 6.7 Cummins. Oddly close to size as our 6.9/7.3. My Dad owns a 2011 Dodge w/ this setup. The truck is bone stock and always will be. It's making positive pressure just off Idle. Now for speculative sake, imagine a slightly larger displacement engine using this turbo. Building boost fast is not going to be an issue.
3. Suggesting using a smaller than 3cm turbo to get faster spool up, would mean using a turbo the size of that stupid keychain that Smogie guy had on here. It would be a turbo smaller than I see guys putting on their snowmobiles. In other words, it would be like pushing all your exhaust thru a drinking straw. It's begging for drive pressure problems, which will mean in major engine damage or at the least, popping head gaskets for fun.
Some other info on the HE351VE for those interested:
1. The HE351VE is well within it's map range up to 45psi, not 30psi. As Alienturtle suggested, this is a hot mod right now for guys running the older 5.9 cummins. The general consensus is this turbo does a fine job up until about 450-500rwhp. I.e. way more power than we will see out of our IDI's.
2. I don't have all the stats handy on the HE351VE. But is' eerily simliar to the HX40/35 combo you hear people talk about. Which I've owned, and is a fantastic turbo. The HE351VE has a 60 series turbine and compressor wheel. It'll move a bunch of air and exhaust.
Not that it was directly asked here, but if one cares. I'll share my concerns as I go down this road of using the HE351VE. There are two of them:
1. Drive Pressure issues. I'll have a boost gauge dedicated to monitoring drive pressures, with a goal of keeping it all as close to 1:1 as possible. I've read that this can be a challenge with this turbo in abnormal applications.
2. Too much boost too fast. I've watched countless videos on midly built Cummins motors (the 5.9) and this thing built 40+psi in a blink of the eye. I'm worried about controlling the boost and having it come on faster than I'll be able to react to have the housing open up and drop boost. Obviously on a IDI like ours, that isn't too happy pushing north of 20psi'ish this could be an issue.
