I understand that my truck will never be a speed demon, and it will never beat a cummins, but if i cant have power, which im ok with, i want looks and sound. I want it to sound good, it already looks good I listened to a 6.2 chevy diesel with a turbo, and it had a straight pipe. Im assuming it had a banks turbo which is what i got. the truck had massive turbo whislte. not compressor whistle, but whistle that cam out of the tailpipe. I want that. I dont have a straightpipe, but even with my 93 factory turbo, it was almost right off the downpipe and it wasn't as much whislte as that 6.2. Plus fordman100's truck has decent turbo whistle, i guess i just want turbo whistle out of the exhaust! And im thinking its not possible to achieve. It sounds stupid, but i like sound in a truck, i think it makes a third of the truck. any help much appreciated.

Just remove the muffler if you don't have inspections, or put a straight thru muffler on it.

You should understand that it would be possible to beat SOME cummins. Just not all of them.

it doesn't make sense to me. I heard a 6.2 and it has really loud turbo whistle, like a cummins, and my 93 was straight piped and i could hear the whistle, but not much at all. nothing like that 6.2. even after i cut the exhaust off the 93 so it was coming out under the cab, it still wasn't loud. A 6.2 probably had the banks turbo, granted it is different, but why wont it sound the same

Mine's really loud. I have a 3" downpipe, expanded to 4" at the end of the downpipe, and then a Walker 4" resonator and a dump that exits about a foot behind the cab. Whistles like crazy.

I have the banks down pipe into 4" straight pipe exiting in the stock location on my 94 and it whistles but IMO it's not loud. I imagine that running more boost would create more whistle too, but I have not done that yet.

I don't know alot about turbos but i know my Holset HX35 on my cummins had a silencer ring that i removed. It doesnt ad to performance but makes the turbo whistle a little louder. I wasnt sure if any of the turbos yall have would have anything like that or not that could be removed.

He wants the choppy, turbine whistle out the tailpipe. Another going against him is the large turbine housing on the Banks non gated turbo he has.

Has a Banks Monster Exhaust from a Cummins on the truck right now, straight thru design.

My suggestion is throw a Typ4 cam in there to move more air and get the turbine spinning at idle.

Best comparison is to listen to a 1st gen Cummins with stock 18.5 cm housing versus 24 valve with a HY35 and 9 cm housing, both with straightpiped exhaust. I know what he's going for, just dont know how to accomplish it cheap without adding performance.

Which Banks turbo do you have? From what I've seen with the IDI's with the wastegated turbo's + a 4" strait pipe produce the sound you're looking for a little better than the non-gated ones

I LOVED the sound of my strait piped 6.5TD--It was very much like a mini D-max Given that they have a similar engine design I thought an IDI could sound about the same or close to it, but so far I'm still stuck with the glasspacks on a 460 sound with no whistle

Search around on Diesel Truck Resource I believe you'll find you're answers there. I've seen dyno sheets with a couple rwhp gain on nearly stock trucks, and 5-6 rwhp on a tuned or plated truck. It is a measurable difference.

Nates got the non gated Banks Sidewinder on his truck.
