Have a 1994 F-350 7.3 IDI turbo with 355,000 miles,5 speed,4x4,crewcab just recently purchased had been sitting for 2 years.I changed oil & replaced starter and got it running. Had to replace some fuel lines from tank, lift pump went out replaced with electric fuel pump. replaced air cleaner,PDR valve & 3 bad glow plugs. Glow plug on left rear cylinder was covered in oil & tip blew out when pulled out. Fuel filter changed & additive in fuel with fresh fuel. This truck starts good 14 degrees this morn started right up & runs like a scalded dog. problem is will run for 20 minutes @ idle warming up then a few miles down road no smoke what so ever, then smokes like freight train, blue smoke. Can see some oil coming from around back of turbo. had a diesel mechanic look @ turbo said was no play in wheel. also replaced return hoses on injectors. Any ideas what is causing blue smoke after warm up. really don't want to pull turbo if don't have to.

Sounds like the oil thins up or the turbo seal opens up and leaks either into the intake or exhaust side. Maybe it leaks all the time into the exhaust, but only after the exhaust heats up enough does it start burning it off.

I would check that turbo myself for shaft play. I would think at that mileage you have to have some. Even brand new some side to side is ok.

Found where oil was coming from on turbo today, oil sending unit leaking, seems to be hardly any play in turbo shaft. Pulled a valve cover to see if gummed up,was clean. started it this morning and ran for 45 min. before it started smoking. checked all fuel lines for heat at injectors all normal. It has some blow by. Thinking about changing valve stem seals before pulling motor. Just trying to make it through next summer with this motor, have another motor i am in process of building.

Ran compression check this morning with # 2,4,6,1,3,7,@ 400 psi,#8@ 390psi, #5@340psi, is that enough differance to indicate a problem in #5 cylinder?

Yes, they should all be within 10%. Thats just slightly above 10% off the average.

Run some AutoRx through it and see what happens.

Thanks, I will give that a try, thought about mixing up concoction and pouring in glow plug hole and let sit overnight like used to do with gas engines but wasn't sure not much on working on diesels have been gasoline mech all my life but learning a lot about diesels now.

Willing to put money on it just being idled too long in cold temps, since you mention good starts at 14*. Lots of guys refer to it as wetstacking. Engine doesn't build enough heat to burn all the fuel efficiently, therefore letting fuel puddle in the exhaust and lightly dilute the oil. Once you get rolling and the exhaust gets good and hot, it starts to burn off the residue causing the smoke.

Try less idling, taking off after the cold advance/high idle kicks off. If you absolutely have to let it sit longer, try wedging something on the accelerator to bring the revs up. I always used an old brake rotor, or long windshield scraper. Power seats plus a stick or scraper works awesome for fine tuning the idle BTW lol.
