Looking to buy a 93 IDI, some questions

I am looking at a 1993 with 148,000. SCLB. 3" lift on 35"s. I believe it is N/A but i will find out soon enough. Dana 60's front and rear. Need a clutch.

1) I want to straight pipe it, is their a kit or anything just without a muffler or do i need to do it myself. If it is a turbo then my question remains the same except with adding a better down pipe.

2) Which gauges should i add? I am basing this question off a completely stock truck with no gauges added yet. What are the essentials for daily driving and towing?

3) What should i look for when i go to check this truck out ?

4) Where can i get little hop up parts like a CAI and stuff like that and what little tricks can i do to get a little extra power and noise out of her. Im not concerned with smoke or anything really. I just want to upgrade my power a little and make her louder if i get her.

i made my own CAI out of pvc pipe and a spectre air filter. works great

if its N/A and you strait pipe it, it should be plenty loud enough for ya

1. Someone with more knowledge than me may be able to answer this one definitively... AFAIK the answer is no.

2. Depending on how heavy you plan on towing, a tranny temp gauge is a good idea. A tranny cooler is a good investment as well.
A (real) oil pressure gauge is a necessity as well. The stock one just don't cut the mustard. I plan on upgrading my stock oil pressure gauge one of these days when time allows.

3. Seeing that it's a '93, the most important thing to check for is SCAs in the coolant. If the current owner either doesn't know what that is or hasn't kept up with it, be wary. I've got one of these installed on my truck. Makes the intake and exhaust sound a bit louder, but I did not notice any increase in power. My truck is still NA but does have headers and dual exhaust.

If you're looking for serious power upgrades, contact Mel (Agnem) for his Moose product lineup. Russ (typ4) is also known to have some mo' power goodies.

The best way to answer your questions is to spend some time on this board and search around. There's more information here than any one person could possibly know. Good luck to you.

Thanks for that great writeup. He said his mechanic has checked over the truck and said everything is good but in the used truck world i cant really trust that too much. I am hopefully going out there this sunday with cash in my hand and hopefully coming back with a good deal.

Check the inside of the radiator, the core can't be cleaned so if it gets dirty it has to be replaced. Hypermax intake is a tad spendy but a good investment in my opinion.

Unless he changed the rear axle, it is a Sterling/Ford 10.25, not a Dana 60. The gauges I'd have in the cab would be: 1: Pyrometer 2: Oil pressure 3: Water temp 4: Trans Temp if automatic. If turbo: Boost.

Ask about SCA's in the cooling system. If not then CAVITATION is a concern.

It kind of sounds like he's not too familar with these trucks. If it has a 5 speed, it is a manual ZF5 (overdrive in 5th). I'd have to wonder why he put "new" axles under the truck and why he'd use a Dana 60 rear vs. the stronger 10.25? I'd ask about that for sure.

I'd venture to guess if he's not familar with the truck, then he's not familar with SCA's and the prevention of cavitation. Have a good look at the coolant and the oil for any signs of them intermingiling. I'd also ask to start it yourself with the motor cold, not after it has been warmed up prior to your arrival.

I was going to try to prevent him from starting it before i got there, i already read that on here. He said his mechanic gave the truck a look over and inspected everything and gave it all the o.k. but his mechanic is a good friend of his so its a bias judging.

From what it seems, i wont be getting this truck, he isnt responding to all of my emails and if he really wanted to sell the truck i feel he would be answering my questions. I have given him my phone number and he hasnt even tried calling me. Its frustrating wanting a truck when the seller isnt doing a good job of selling. This will be my first diesel and i am hoping to go to diesel school shortly so i would like to have my own diesel to tinker with.
