Light problems...

My first post on here! I just bought a 96 f250 psd and everything is great so far except one thing...my headlights randomly turn off..but if i pull the lever back the brights turn on. but if i push it forward to turn on the brights nothing happens...even if i push the light switch off and back on it still doesnt do anything...please help...

Pull the whole switch out of your dash. Replace it. Check the harness and connector for burned spots. They're a common fail point.

Possible, but the light switch in the dash is more likely. I had a similar problem; headlights shutting off randomly, and switching to brights didn't help. I had a burned spot on my connector and a bad switch. Replaced them both, and haven't had a problem since.

I had the column switch melt down on me before, top of the column felt warm

This would suggest that it's the headlight switch and not the column switch. The column switch is doing exactly what it should. The high beams should come on when you pull the lever toward you in the "flash-to-pass" position even with the headlight switch turned off. It bypasses the headlight switch; that's why it's working. I'll bet you'll find both the switch and connector scorched when you reach under there.
