So my 6.9 had some weird issues when I bought it with the IP leaking fuel in the oil. Washed things out pretty good in there. So when I got it fixed up, I kinda expected a few issues, leaks burning some oil etc. It didn't leak a drop, but it did burn some more oil than "normal" for these old trucks. 120k on it, it was burning about a quart every 1500 miles, wouldn't go below the add mark though just kinda stopped there but I kept adding back up to be safe.
Changed the oil once, put the same oil (Delo dino oil) back in it and the consumption got a little better, burnt a quart every 2000 miles if I'd top it off but settled a little above the add mark and took a lot longer to burn when it was close to add.
Just for kicks the most recent time I put Rotella Synthetic 15w40 in it because it's all I had by accident. My 7.3 I have a huge donaldson remote mount filter and a bypass filter and it takes about 18 quarts so when walmart had the rest of the old version of the rotella synthetic on clearance in the giant 5 gallon buckets, I bought 25 gallons of it. I'd say what I paid, but there would be some jealousy there lol..
Anyways, I drove the truck 1000 miles and expected it to have no oil at all and it was fine, just a speck below add. This was scary, as I figured it burnt 2 quarts and was filling with fuel again but just smelled like oil. Another 1000 miles and its right there yet again.
I've always heard all IDI's hate rotella and we don't have to discuss the "S" word but I thought this was just pretty strange and figured I'd post it up in case someone is doing the feared what oil should I use search on here.. I guess my 6.9 is proving the stereotype of guzzling rotella to not be an exact science.
Just don't put it in dad's IDI, it will literally not be there the next day in his truck lol..
