inoperable overhead compass/gauge set

my moms 01 excursion has the overhead console/gauge set and it just stopped working . . . i checked the fuses, and they are all good. i do not wanna start taking stuff apart just yet. any ideas on how to fix it, i hear this is a common problem, but i cannot find a fix?
