Injector Pump is about to die

92 F450, IDI 7.3, 210,000 miles showing, don't know past service history.

I think the injector pump is starting to die . It's losing power above 50 mph and surging when I try to hold steady speed. Where can I get a rebuild for the best buck / best rebuild ???

Still starts and idles smooth enough. Accel at low speed is "normal". Is it on it's way south or is there some other problem?

My pump is en route to Mel Agne aka Agnem. He rebuilds these pumps and from what ive heard hes the best. They say IP and Injectors last for about 100k miles. Mine made it til 180K before it started leaking and making starting impossible. I aint going to liw there is a bias here because he is a senior member, but read the HALL of Shame.. It seems to me its a roll of the dice when it comes to other rebuilt pumps, but thats not to say a lot of people have had good luck with them.

The cheapest one may not always be the best, but the best one is always the cheapest the second or third time you have to replace the cheap one

First change the fuel filter and fill it back up with Auto trans fluid, or diesel kleen, then run the truck if that dont help then i will tell you something else to do

Dope that pump!!!! 1 quarter your favorite diesel 1 quart marvel mystry oil and 1 quart 2 cyl!!! My pump on me ole truck has about 250k on it now. Its dopped pretty good though.

my black truck i had was on the original pump and injectors when i got rid of it. 272k on them and still working fair.

How old is the fuel filter and lift pump?

I concure with most of the above posting... No biase either but I have owned two moose pumps and will be getting a baby moose later on...

I would make sure the fuel filter is new first, then check the mechanical fuel pump to make sure that is working fine first. i would personally be looking at the injection pump last. The big money is on the injection pump, the other stuff is cheap ****, and well worth looking into first and foremost.

I had those exact issues with mine. Changed my fuel filter. Filled it with half Diesel Additive half ATF and i havent had an issue since.

Start with the easy stuff first, and take your time. I just had a nightmare chasing down what I thought was a bad injector pump, even replacing the injector pump. Long story short, mine turned out to be a harsh air bubble, which in hind sight I maybe could have chased down had I taken more time on each step - or maybe not.

Put a fuel gage after the filter, one you can see in the cab. A 10 lb gage is big enough. Your lift pump should put out 5-7 PSI at idle. At 50 MPH prolly around 4.

Sounds just like a fuel filter to me. Not really necessary to put anything special in the fuel filter, some stuff may do more harm than good. Regular ole diesel will be just fine.

If you do need an IP, from what I've read a moose from Mel is really the way to go. However, if you're like me and can't afford one, a pump from Oregon Fuel Injection will probably do well for you. I got one for about $450 and its doing really well for me.
