I tried a search, but didn't manage to pull up any threads that gave me a clear answer on this.

My truck (89 7.3 N/A with E4OD) is idling at 1000 RPM, which is too high; it may have been set that way on purpose for its former role as a crash truck where it had a ton of lighting on it.

There's a "throttle" control in the cab, and I have that pushed all the way in, but it still idles at 1000.

I'd rather adjust this the proper way than by trial and errror- so can someone please clue me in on where to adjust (I assume on or by the injection pump) and how to spot that auxiliary throttle cable so that I can take any tension out of it in case that's hanging things up?

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions-- I'll have to look at things, per the second thread you mentioned.

I've got photos, but not on this computer- hope to follow up at some point. It had a red light bar on the roof, which I had to remove, two 500 watt floods on poles behind the cab (now stored in my barn and capable of being re-installed) and a steerable spot/ searchlight up through the ceiling (still on it). 8000 lb winch that's part of the front bumper/ brushguard. It's a former USAF firetruck, that then went to a local volunteer fire dept. I'm the first private owner, and it only has 13,000 miles on it.

If you look on the passenger side of your injection pump where the throttle cable attaches to the IP arm, on the front side of the IP arm there is a screw that you can turn with a flat-blade screwdriver - this is your idle speed limit screw, with the engine all warmed up try backing the screw out a bit and see if the idle speed goes down. Another thing to check while you're there is the high-idle solenoid, it sits right in front of the IP throttle arm and when the engine is all warmed up the plunger of the solenoid should not be touching the arm, just sit very close to it - every time you adjust your idle speed with the screw you also have to readjust the solenoid plunger, you do this with a 1/4" wrench as the plunger can be threaded in and out as needed - in your case you need it further in, as if you leave it where it is when you turn the idle screw out to drop the idle speed down the IP arm will hit the plunger and further backing out of the idle screw will have no effect on the idle speed. So yeah, work these two things together, and it should be alright. This is all assuming your manual throttle control cable don't limit things, in which case you may want to disconnect it from the IP arm.
