Ok guys, this is for a friend of my uncle. He has an 89 7.3 Manual with a banks turbo. He says it will run fine but dies at stop lights but will start again after cranking a little bit... until the next light.

I realize without putting hands on it I can't nail it down but does anyone have suggestions on where to start? My first guess is possibly air intrusion or a timing issue but what do you guys think?

I'll ask. Bear with me though because we're going through my uncle right now. I'm hoping to get out to look at it but don't have that planned out yet.

Seems like it has to be either electrical, or fuel related.
Electrical could be ruled out easy enough by jumping out the fss.
As for fuel related, i'll throw broken pickup tube into the mix of possibles, assuming the tank isn't full.

Has the truck been sitting? When I first put my Moose back on a couple months back it did this twice right at first. Running fuel through it fixed mine but yeah some atf would be good.

I haven't read through this cuz I don't have time I can guarantee you the metering valve is sticking you need a dose of fresh fuel filter while the engine is warm with ATF and Diesel Kleen and fired up and run it and do that two or three times and it should clear up it's not electrical it's not lift pump not air intrusion it's a metering valve

@typ4 I know you're busy, thanks for taking time to reply anyway!

I told him with a warm engine fill the filter with ATF or MMO (ATF preferred) and run it about a minute then let it sit overnight.

I'll update if I hear anything back.

Metering valve. Do what russ said. Then run an additive for several tanks for fuel. My 93 did this also unless I had additive in the tank.

I recently had a slight surging at random moments and ran a bottle of Amsoil Diesel Injector Clean through the system and the surging seems to have gone away.

Hey guys, I’m new to the forum. Been reading threads and picking up knowledge from you guys for a little while now but I’m finding it a little difficult to navigate the forum. Anyway, don’t mean to hyjack the thread but I have a similar problem on a 93 f250 7.3 turbo. But I also have a few other complications; running wmo, old injector pump and injectors (at least 175,000 miles)! Changing pump and injectors is on my to-do list eventually but wanted to experiment with wmo before I made that investment! Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!!
Personally, I would do the IP & Injectors before the WMO. May check with towtruckdave on the WMO. I think he has run it for a long time. I tried but it was too much to keep up with for me.

Thanks riphop, I knew my pump and injectors were a little sketchy so figured I’d try the wmo first. That way if I messed anything up, Hey it was already going bad!!!
