I have a 71 Bronco that I would love to drop an IDI in. Couple problems though. 1. I already have a built & balanced 351W for it

2. I was planning on an NP435 tranny. Anybody know if that would bolt up to an IDI with an adaptor? I have the stock 3sp so the NP435 is not set in stone.

3. I'm going with a 5.5" lift which is a pretty soft suspension. I have the front coils already but no other parts of the suspension. how badly would the IDI crush the front end down? I could use the 5.5 up front & 4.5 leafs in the back to get a level stance I guess

4. I'd have to horse trade for all the stuff I need. Would a built 351w bring an even trade for an IDI with the goodies included (ie. turbo, IP, INJ's)

I've seen a ton of these broncos converted to the 4BT cummins with good success & power/weight ratios. What's the thoughts on the IDI? everyone chime in.....

good to see you have your head back on your shoulders scott!:rotflmao unfortunately i honestly dont think it is a phiesable plan a 7.3 is going to make that thing WAAAYYY front heavy if you can even shoehorn it in there. IIRC the bellhousing from a t18 will bolt to a 435 but why not a t18 to start with? but then you will have to hope you have enough room left for a driveline.

my sis gave this some serious thought when she had her 66. a 435 is interchangable on the tail end with a T18/19. just use the diesel T19 bell housing. i think you are right in that weight would be your pimary enemy, cooling could be an issue as well.

Scott, you could definitely do it. In fact, I believe there is someone already on the forum here who IS in the process of doing it. I would lean on Tim Lenard and others who have done 70's vintage F series for advice, as they overcame the motor mount challenge. I think you should figure on sticking a whole IDI drive train in there, and forget whatever trans you have. Sell the gasser and trans to fund the project. The springs you would have to get made at a spring shop. They will have to duplicate the coils you have, but increase the stock diameter. By how much, you will need to compare stock F-150 or Bronco coils to F-250/F-350 IDI coils, as that is the only difference that exists between them.

Scott, I have a complete T-19 diesel transmission setup just waiting to go into that thing! Shameless plug. I swear.
I have it listed in the marketplace.

Anybody know what the overall length would be with a T19 & Dana 20. Will a D20 bolt up or do I need to stick with a BW case. This is all speculation at this point, just figuring what it may require to do this.

i would not be so quick to dump the 435 at all. they are vertually identical externally and interchangable with the T-18/19. i can double check but i think there is only about 1/4" length differance between them. otherwise they have the same bolt patterns front and rear.

i have both sitting in my garage.

i have a scout T-19 with a dana 20 on it in my garage. i can measure it but i am not sure the case (jeep style) is the same length as the ford style. the adapter between them is only about an 1" thick. so far as a know it is not a big deal or hard to mount the dana 20 to a 435. not sure on the T-18/19 though.

I don't have a 435 yet but that was the plan for my build. I do however already have the Dana 20 as it was hooked to the back of the stock 3 speed. So I'm open to tranny choices as long as it isn't an automatic.

to bad i need it for my Jeep:D it would have to be completely gone through to since the scout has a foot long input shaft out the front. i was planning on putting the front input shaft from a ford in and the scout output in the back. i cant say for sure if the Jeep and Ford style dana 20 interchange between bolt patterns either. i know they dorp on differant sides, mine is a pass side drop while Ford is drivers drop.

but you are right the T-18/19 and dana 20 is one of the shortest driveline setups you can get.

factory Ford round pattern adapters to tranfercases are about 8" where mine is only about 1".

I have a 435 behind my 6.9 in my Bronco. The Bell and Clutch were in the 250 when it was pulled and never got removed so YEAH, they do interchange. Im not sure how it is all going to work as I have only driven it a few feet back and forth so far as I do not have the core support built. The main bennie of the T-18 (so I have heard) is the syncro in 1st as the 435 is not. And since I use first as first and not low, it may be something you want to look into. OR, you could trade me a 4bt Bronco for my 6.9.

actaully the first in a T-18 is not syncroed like a NP-435, its the T-19's that are syncroed in first.

i have a diesel T-19 (4.1 first) but would rather have the lower T-18 (6.32-1) first even if it is not syncroed in first. heck i would use my 435 with a 7.xx-1 first if i could adapt it to my transfercase without a $500 adapter. sorry i am going off thread.

...Would you like some measurements? Since I have that setup, I can do what you need...but it is cold and snowy today...Maybe it will be hot tomorrow again.

scout trans won't fit behind a 6.9...dontcha think i woulda done it already?? cookoo if u take a ford t-19 and change the outputshaft to accept the D20 bullgear then drill and tap the rear of the trans for the adapter plate it'll work, i guess! i just used the 2wd ford t-19 then a divorced NP205. we'll see how that goes together. and i got the +"18 longer scout with a body lift so i have some more room to play.
