i hear fuel pump noise but not pumping fuel

drove into dealer to have tire rotation and i was low on fuel light just came on. they said it ran out of fuel and they put 5 gal in. fuel gauge was almost to 1/4 after the 5 gal. tell me i had plenty of fuel before the added 5 gal.. now truck will not start and no fuel is going into the filter... hooked another fuel pump and truck started. for 2003 7.3 180k you think maybe it was time to replace.. i have no ride for the weeken and now need a new pump. i would like info on a high performance pump that will last!!! i run veggie oil in heated aux tank whats a good pump????

ive had to replace 1 on each my trucks so far, went with ones from advance auto.
there are some other aftermarket replcements, but I forget the name now, they have them on ebay.
if ya wanna spend the $$$$ fass or airdog cant be beat
