How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

Correct, transmission needs dropped to do the rear main seal. If it isn't leaking... Leave it alone is my philosiphy. I have had my transmission down twice and my engine out once... Original rear seal frol 1988 doing just fine.
Ironically I have an atf leak somewhere back there. Haven't hunted down the source quite yet.

I didn’t mess with the main seals on mine since they weren’t leaking. Here’s the videos I watched to get ready to do the head gaskets:

And here’s a link to a thread where one of the members here posted a bunch of tech manuals:

Thatis a good way to do it too.

When I built my engine I did it in chassis as well. I left the exhaust attached to the heads and pulled it as one chunk. You can pull the manifold bolts through the fender liner too if you wish.

Front seal can be done in chassis, rear can as well if you pull the transmission.

My first guess would be the front seal in the transmission.

I'm starting a parts list and would appreciate any input on what brands or kits I can go with. I have heard that there is plenty of junk seals and gaskets out there and to make sure I buy the "right" ones. I will be needing the obvious, HG, seals, manifold gasket. What types worked for you guys and what else am I missing?
I also tried looking for a good youtube tutorial where someone pulls a 7.3 or 6.9 and couldn't find a single one, I have the manual but visuals work best for me, anyone know of a good one out there? Thanks all.

I prefer Fel-Pro too. I don't like cork valve cover gaskets though. I prefer the rubber ones. I can't tell which ones the Napa kit has by the pictures.
Pulling one of these engines is fairly self explanatory if you're mechanically inclined. Once you get into the job, there really isn't much there to remove. It's not like a newer vehicle that has more wiring plugs than our engines have cubic inches of displacement.

Yeah, took care of the valve cover gaskets last year, I too prefer rubber the rubber one.

My felpro upper gasket set came with rubber valve cover gaskets.

I also used felpro front and rear seal kits, comes with the main seals and the gaskets for seal carrier to the block.

Might you have a link to those?

Dumb question but when you guys refer to the front and main seals, what parts are we talking about here? What contact points do the front seal and the main seal, seal?
