hissing noise

on cold starts there is a loud noise coming form the flywheel/clutch area. It goes away after 5-10 mins of driving. it is not quite continuous but it is there every start up. it sounds like TTTSSSSSSSSTTTSSSSSSSSSSTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS TTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

my only guess is the damn DMF. Mine clatters and crap like crazy

Never heard a flywheel hiss, but wouldn't put it past it either. I'd guess throw out to.

My vote is TOB also. You can pull the fork, and get your hand in there and force grease into it. It's hard, but not impossible. Best if you have a spare bearing in your hand, so you can look at how it is made, and know where to message it. Expect pain...

Old dirty grease is even thicker then new when cold.

ok how do i get the forks off? Sorry i'm lost when it comes to transmissions. do i need to force grease in there or do i need to replace it all to gether? what else is a throw out bearing called?

It's called a clutch release bearing at most auto parts houses. It won't break the bank by any means if you can do the work yourself. Worst part of it is that the ZF is cast as 1 piece with the bellhousing so it has to come out to replace. You need a good comfy place to work, a transmission jack is a necessity a lift or ramps would be great. When/if you do take it apart I'd also replace the pilot bearing with a kevlar pilot bushing from Ft, Wayne Clutch. A relined clutch from them also isn't too expensive. I'd be willing to help you I just can't bring it here to Mom and Dad's house and obviously we can't work on it at your dorm....

Ok on the Transmission there is a housing that surrounds the gear that the starter turns. Do I need to remove this to find the bearing that is making the noise? If i do need to is there any way i can without removing the exhaust pipe? How else do i access the throw out bearing? do i have to drop the transmission?

Yes, you should be able to take the sheetmetal cover off and peek up in there. My truck has the stock y-pipe, and the cover just wiggles past it.

I am assuming the other guys are saying the bearing is sliding on on the clutch fingers instead of turning, making the noise. If you put a little bit of grease on the clutch fingers/throwout bearing face, it may make the noise go away for awhile, but if the bearing is drying out, it will probably come back.

I am in the process of changing my truck from a c6 to a zf, and I just got the c6 out today. I bolted my DMF together, and installed it a little while ago. Hefting up that flywheel and trying to start the bolts to the back of the engine was not easy.

yeah that cover fought me for 20 mins until i said forget this and bolted it back on. I guess i will try to remove it tomorrow and take a peak up in there. Haha if I have to remove the Y pipe then I coulndt hear if the bearing was going or not.
