But, he said he checked fuel and was getting plenty at the fuel filter schrader valve. So was I. I have a electric pump. When it would stall, I could leave the key on and had plenty of fuel squirting out of the valve. I took the guts of the valve out, plenty of fuel flow.
That is what had me stumped. That should eliminate all the rust theories and anything else tank related that would starve the engine for fuel. That is why I thought it had to be the IP. Also when I was cranking, I had no smoke out of the tailpipe, so no fuel getting to the engine cylinders.
I would leave it sit a couple of days, frustrated, and I would go back And try again after the batteries were charged back up. I did not cycle the glowplugs to save the batteries. But I would crank and crank, and then low and behold I saw smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I had fuel! So I would cycle the glowplugs, and it would start right up. Run for 5 minutes, then stall. Crank it, no more smoke, so no fuel to the cylinders. Again, plenty of fuel coming out of the schrader valve.
I went through this routine several times. You had to let it sit for a few days before trying it again. Always the same result. Blowing the return line out made the problem go away, I do not have a clue what it was clogged with.
