Help!!! Something dropped in my fuel tank

My truck was running low on fuel, and i put fuel in a 5 gallon gas can and the cap on the can is normally connected to a piece of plastic that goes around the neck of the gas can. It broke a while back so the ring around the neck of the gas can had an inch and a half tail on it, that was normally connected to the cap. I took the cap off, and like a dummy, i left the broken piece on the filler neck of the gas can. I started pouring and after some time, it fell in the fill spout for the fuel tank. It was already washed down by the fuel i was putting in. Do i have to get this piece out or will it be ok in the tank?

Well, the factory fuel pick up screen tends to fall into little pieces in the tank as well. The question is, do you feel the piece is large enough to stay out of the fuel pick up, or small enough to get sucked into the fuel system. If it gets sucked into the fuel system, it will either get stuck somewhere between the tank and the filter, likely in the tank selector. That could seriously screw with proper fuel supply and the proper function of the tank selector valve.

Was it the front or rear tank? Not that it matters, but the front is easier to drop (at least in my opinion).

it was in the front tank. And i dropped the tank a month ago to patch a hole. I am not sure on the size of the fuel pick up... imagine a wedding ring the size of a quarter or a hair bigger, and it has about a inch and a half tail on it that is about as big around as a carpenter pencil lead.

Years ago I worked at a gas station and was fueling someones car. When I pulled the nozzle out the spring came off and went right down the guys tank. I never did say anything about it to him.

Do you think it is something that will float on the fuel or be at the bottom of the tank?

It's too big, don't worry about it.

No need to worry about it. It probably didn't reach the tank. Probably wedged in the soft fill line. Even if it reached the tank its ok. Just be careful the next fillup on the front tank. If the piece is stuck in the fill hose you may have issues with fuel spitting back on you...

Don't worry about it.

It ain't the first time a gas-can snout has fell into a tank, along with wrist-watches, inkpens, and pacifiers.



Probably twenty or more years ago, I was pouring gas from a military can with the flexible metal snout into a saddle-tank on a F-700 Ford and lost the entire snout in there.

I spent every extra minute for days, fishing through that 2-inch opening with hooked wires and one of those flexible push-button grabber gizmos.

Several times, I would get it right up to the opening and it would almost come out, only to snag on something and fall back in.

I finally gave up and left it in there.

The truck never knew the difference and is still going strong today.
