HELP! Replacing fuel tanks and accessories.

I’m not sure if this has any relevance but the fuel pickup on my Ford (oem was disintegrated) has a side port thing, some kind if vent maybe. Is there any directional positioning for this? AND... does anyone have a tip or procedure on how to get the sending unit / pick-up back in and procure the gasket and ring that holds it in place? Thanks.
